I'm looking for an inexpensive reliable printer. Primary uses will be word processing. Speed is not a major issue. I'd prefer a printer with cartridges that are not expensive; perhaps one whose cartridges are readily available remanufactured/refilled. Advice?

I'm partial to the HP932, but Doc and some of the others will recommend some of the other HP's! The key is, a number of us tend to recommend the HP's! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I saw the title of this thread and thought to myself, "HP". So I guess my suggestion would be the best HP you can afford. The ink is kind of pricy, but it doesnt run out too fast as long as you do not constantly print in high quality(not generally needed) and it is readily available http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
i suggest epson over here.
sweet printers man, cheap fast smooth,i prefer top-loading as opposed to most hp style loading myself.

I'd suggest HP 93x series. It's the same as a 95x and 97x cxi series, just slower printing. The reason I'd recommend this printer is the price and printing quality. Epson printer also have great outputs. However, from my experience using Epson Photo 700 & 750 wasn't all that great. As you may already know, the heads wear out after a period of time and because the printer head is attached to the printer, not the ink cartridge, the only way to get it replaced is to get it serviced. As for HP, the head is attached to the ink cartridge which gets replaced each time the ink gets replaced. The down side to this is that the ink cartridges are rather expensive because of this reason. But still, I'd rather pay the little extra and get clean outputs rather than have the printer head wear out and have crummy outputs...

I've got an HP832c, which is like 3 years old, and I have never had a problem with it.
As to the ink cartridge prices, I print everything from pictures (in high quality mode) to documents (in normal mode) and only purchase 1 set of cartridges every 10 months or so.
It prints very fast doing just text, and the picture quality is outstanding on glossy photo paper.
Definitely HP!!!

HP 895cse at www.staples.com (http://www.staples.com) is about $115.00 when using a www.jumpondeals.com (http://www.jumpondeals.com) $25 off $100 coupon.
This is a "Professional" printer with a duty cycle of 3000 pages per month.
USB or Parallel
Ink costs are rated as low when you factor in the large capacity black cartridge 42ml
Color carts can be had for $48 in the twin pack #CR1823t = $24 ea
Refil kits can be had at Staples on-line also for rather cheap.
The Xerox is probably the cheapest, err the C8 maybe, can be had for about $60-75.00 , very easy to fill and has a removable print head unlike the Epson.
The Epson is like the Xerox in a couple of ways,, ancinet top loading design, noisy, easy to fill.
The Epson is easy to total out, if ya don't print often and the print heads stop up ,, throw it away, finished, done, history.
The HP's are very quiet, they don't beat and bang on start up of the computer like so many others do.

HP all the way. The others just don't compare IMHO. The cartridges may be a bit more expensive but you're paying for a new print head every time!!

I had an HP 540 for 6 or so years now and it just went out on me the other day. The only bad thing is that I had to change the cartridge if I wanted to print in color and do it again to print in black. I'd buy another one...

I agree with sharder8. The HP932 is a FANTASTIC printer for the $. I paid $200.00 for mine about 6 mos. ago. But I will say this; the printer cartridges are a little bit expensive… I love my printer http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

try the HP 930C.a good one and not so expensive.print quality is good and speed is ok.u could always go in for an Epson .they have better models though a bit higher on the cost side.
I just had to get rid of my HP 693C. I have to say I was less than impressed. It was 4 years old when I got rid of it (2 weeks ago) and I needed a printer. So I picked up a $50 Lexmark Z42 from Staples... It rocks! Even if I only use it for 1 year... it prints Pictures clearer (or at least as clear as) most photo printers....

Last year I bought a Xerox M750 and am very happy with it. It was a good printer at $140 but has had its price slashed recently to $40. I would strongly recommend it.

The HP 932 WAS a great printer, but alas it is no more. Most stores should run out of them by the next month or so. In return, look for the HP 940. It is the same price (at least at Circuit city) and same quality, but a little faster, and quieter.

Yet another HP fan here. Check for bargains on www.pricewatch.com. (http://www.pricewatch.com.) The one I have at home is an old DeskJet 1000C. I got it for $170 at Computer City. (It was a good deal because it was a floor display.) Have had (almost) no trouble from it.
I also administer a 27 system LAN at work, and have had relatively good luck with all of the HP's. I also have a wide variety of different models here.
Definitely avoid low-cost Epson or Cannon. While I have no experience with their higher price point models, these things sometimes have trouble right out of the box.

HP dose make a great printer, but their low end isn't worth messing with. If you're just doing word prossesing, I'd think about a personal lazer from Lexmark or Samsung. They are nothing for a bussiness seting but $200 for lazer quilty isn't bad. The cost of toner is cheaper than ink (per page) too. Just a thought.

I like HP printers, only because of the way it stores the paper. I dont really like how epson printers do it.

crazyray - If word processing is your main thing, then I would recommend a laser printer. Yeah - I know, they are more expensive. But, the expense of an ink jet that gets buried is the ink cartridge. It is an accepted fact that the cost per page for a laser over an inkjet is much cheaper. With a few lasers coming in now below $300 it is a reasonable alternative. I suggest you look in that direction unless you want to print in color. The more black and white pages you print the more you save.

I own several HPs, the latest is the 970 which I love but it is very expensive to run if you use a lot of color. If you care about the text quality, one of the 900 series from HP would be your best bet. The only nonHP printer I have is a Canon and the text quality is terrible.

crazyray,
My choice would be an older HP [Canon engine,EPS,EPL,EPE] Laser. Something like a Laserjet 4,[even 3's].
Inkjets can't compare to Lasers for print quality. Reman Carts and parts are plentiful. M/C's over 8/10yrs old will not do heavy graphics well, but for text, superb.
Some the older m/c's will have had a hard life, but most are more repairable than late inkjets.
Advice on parts etc, for these, and others is available at www.thecopiernetwork.com (http://www.thecopiernetwork.com)

I like my Brother HL1240 laser.Retails at $299 and worth every penny but can be gotten for a lot less. There are lasers out now for less than $200 but I know nothing about them.
The HL1240 works in linux using the hplaserjet 4/5/6 and letter page format.
