I am currently using a 3-4 year old 20GB Western Digital, and its about time to upgrade. I have read many user reviews on the WD 80GB 8mb cache HDD. Many say it rocks, and others say it whines a little. Of 80 GB 8 meg cache HDD's, what would be preferable? Maxtor/WD/Seagate? Noise is more of a factor to me than performance is. As I'm sure they all perform pretty well.

Seagate's are generally quieter than other brands, but I've got a Maxtor DiamondMax 9 80GB drive and I can't hear it at all. Pretty cheap too :)

Either the Seagate or Maxtor would be best. The WD is fast, but it's not as quiet.

I would also lean towards Maxtor/Seagate over WD - with Seagate usually being the quieter of the bunch. I'm currently using 2x80GB Maxtor drives and they are fairly quiet. You can get an 80GB Maxtor with either the standard 2MB cache (6Y080L0) or, for more performance, an 8MB cache (6Y080P0) is available.

Agree:

I always get Maxtor, whether ATA or SCSI. Quite and reliable.
