I have Bell Sympatico Ultra internet, a D-LINK DI704P router and a Speedstream 5200 Modem. Just recently the router has been losing the connection with the router. Like all of a sudden my internet would go down and then when I checked the router firmware, the PPoE wasn't connected. This could be solved by unplugging the modems power and re-connecting with the router. So it was become a pain in the neck and I called Bell. The guy told me to try the modem hooked up directly to my machine. So I hooked up my modem to directly to my primary machine, set up the PPoE connection and connected. But no programs worked with the net, I could ping out to IP addresses but that was it, IE, Outlook and MSN did not find a connection. So I got rid of the PPoE connection and went back to my old config thru the router. But now my local area network connection comes up with an automatic private address instead of my routers DHCP. I've tried **** near everything, talked to tech support for an hour and still nothing works. They told me I had to format the system and reinstall Windows... because I didn't have system restore running. I need the internet as I am a web designer... I'm also a hardware tech so spare me the simplified terms. I've ruled out that it’s the NIC, cable, and router.

When you shift the PPPoE authentication from software to a router, you need to make sure you do not set the router to time out after xx seconds. You leave this setting unchecked and instead check the "keep this connection alive" setting. As far as your local network not working, you have to understand how PPPoE authenticates. It does so by passing off a network ID or username and a password WITH a MAC address. If you go screwing around with it, you end up with a 3 day IP lease on a different MAC address and you are basically screwed until you release the IP from the last hardware that obtained it (eg. your NIC card or your router) or the lease runs out.
Reinstall Windows, what a bunch of goof balls.....

Reinstall the tcp/ip stack
it goes something like
netsh int ip reset <PATH>\resetlog.txt

When you have the router hooked up, make sure your local area network is configured to obtain everything automatically. In the network area of the control panel, disable and delete the PPPoE connection. Now log into the router and make sure it is configured how I told you to configure it and check the logs to see if it is attempting authentication. If there is an error, write it down.
If you have messed with the NIC card, make sure it still looks ok in the device manager and that the local area connection in the control panel connections area still points to it correctly. Make sure the XP firewall is turned off. Make sure any local firewalls are turned off or correctly configured.
