I was considering helping a friend of mine build a machine for gaming, and I was debating on using a video card. He wants to go with the 9600XT, but I figure for the price the 9800SE is probably the better buy, because it might be softmoddable and it has all the pipelines in tact...might be a similar scenario to the 9500 Pro...

What do you guys think?

The 9800SE is a bit faster than the 9600XT. There is a chance of modding it if you get the right one, but I wouldn't bet whole heartedly on it. I would get the 9800SE, it's faster than the 9600XT without modding and it's cheaper.
