How many hard drives can be installed in Abit BX6 V2 system/ Same questions on internal modems.

Thank you

well...you are going to get a lot of different answers on this one....It truely depends on what you want to use for harddrives...IE IDE or Scuzzy or a combo of both (that's what I have)

I have in my system
1 quantum 6.4 ide
1 fujitsu 8.4 ide
2 seagate 9.1 Scuzzy
1 quantum 2.1 Scuzzy
and also 1 44x ide cd-rom and 1 plextor 8x bunner (scuzzy) and 1 plextor 40x reader (scuzzy) and to top the whole thing off a 8gig 4mm tape drive (scuzzy)

I could still fit 1 more ide harddrive into the "stock" ide ports! and then If I added a "promise" card I could realisticly get an additional 4 IDE drives....then I could change over to a "ultrawide2" scuzzy setup and add 9 more drives and then if I took out either my soundcard or modem I could add more scuzzy interface cards and add even more drives.....

As to modems I have 2 in my system right now and I am out of IRQ's now.

LOL Glytzhkof! /forum/biggrin.gif

What can I say...I love storage!

BTW the scuzzy drives have my photo and video editing on them. Stuff like that just eats up space quickly. and I also backup my wife's and daughters computers to mine and then do weekly backups of the WHOLE system to the DAT drive!

I think the answer to your question is this.

You can have 4 IDE devices connected to your board. IDE devices usually include Hard Drives, CD Roms, Zip Drives, LS 120 Super Floppies.....that is all that comes to mind for now.

You will have a CD & a Hard drive for sure. If that is it, you can potentially add another 2 IDE Hard Drives.

As you have already learnt you can also get a Scuzzy card & start adding devices to that. This type of setup is expensive & usually left to proffessional/server style systems or to people who have lost their connection with reality.... I would /forum/smile.gif love /forum/smile.gif a scuzzy setup but whenever I head off into fantasy world I hear my wife start yelling & it brings me back **** it.

As for the modem question....as you start adding PCI/ISA devices you start running out of IRQ's. You could disable on board comm ports to free up resources & get 2 or 3 internal modems hooked up but then why would you want to??

Krusty: I figure it depends a little what motherboard Arnie A has. If he's got a board supporting ATA66 he should be able to add more than 4 IDE devices. I don't know how this would work with regard to IRQ's (dreaded subject) though.

I agree on the modem issue, why install many modems? Btw I didn't think that running out of IRQs was a problem when adding PCI cards. Don't they share an IRQ?

Thanks for clearning that up Mntsnow. I've never used modems. I'm connected to a LAN, and my internet connection is very fast, so the use of modem is uncharted terrain /forum/smile.gif.

As for PCI-sharing: I have never actually tried it out, but it is no surprise that PCI-cards don't "appreciate" sharing an IRQ. On the other hand PCI cards are much better than ISA cards. I've never had so much trouble as when I added an ISA sound card to my system.

check out this site www.amquestmodem.com (http://www.amquestmodem.com) 4 modems on 1 pci card using 1 irq.

Glytzhkof...He said he had a BX6 v2 which is what my answer is based on. Thanks for the help.

Glytzhkof,

Some cards do not "Share" IRQ's nicely. That is now somewhat taken care of with the advent of USB being "hotpluggable" and all. The advantage of multible modems is a faster connection if your ISP supports "multilinking" such as mine. I use 2 diamond supra 56k modems and regularly connect at 98666bps. (49333 x 2) Because at this time my area doesnt have Cable or DSL service. TCI@home says it will be ATLEAST another YEAR before they are in my area! /forum/frown.gif so until then I use Multilinking to get faster internet speed.

FWIW: I just added the Promise Fastrak ATA33 card, two 6.4 GB Samsung EIDE UDMA drives in Mobiledock removeable chassis. The installation was easy, easy. Configured as a two drive RAID, W95 sees it as one 12.8 GB drive. I get sustained data rates of better than 8MB/sec. Total cost less than $400, and when I need more space, out come the old drives and I just slip in two more! So far so good!

And here I am stuck with a 3.2GB hard drive and a bog standard 1.44Mb floppy.
The day I get a tape drive is the day God decides to go for a walk around London in his robes...

Theoretically you can put 8 IDE HDs in a system and as many SCSI's as you have room!

Of course, this is only theory!

If have 4 IDE and 2 SCSI in my computer, this is after I rigged 2 more internal drive bays.

As for modems...
I have personally never had more than 1 internal and 1 external modem on any computer. But, you can put as many as you have available com ports. And since you can get multiport serial cards that support 32 devices, and you can put 4 of those in a computer....

So you can see, what you can do with a computer is only limited by

Your imagination,
Your technical skill/resources,
And, obviously, your budget!
