I switched CD-ROM drives with a Dell and an old Windows 95 Machine because the older computer had a better drive.

I got the Dell CD-ROM drive to work fine in the old Machine, but I can't seem to get the 56x Reader to register in My Computer. I can't see the drive there, And I can't load auto-play disks. What to do?

Does anyone know where to download standard 56x drivers?

there are no drivers for cdrom drives. make sure you have the jumpers set correctly. try the cdrom drive by itself on the secondary ide cable.

Thanks guys, I won't know if you're correct until I can get back to my friends place.

I couldn't get the drive to work so I swapped them back and left, but he didn't mind to much. There are drivers for CD-ROM drives but you usually don't need them. The drive I was trying to install was either at master or cable sellect (jumper nub config), And I didn't think to swap them around. Cable Sellect would generally work wouldn't it? Stop me if I'm wrong, but I thought that you could just cap the CSL jumpers and be done with it. Any scenarios where this wouldn't work?

Older 40-wire IDE cable may not be CS-compatible. About 60% of the 40-wire cable in general circulation is not supported.
