What is an infared port used for?

It is used for communication between devices. Infrared is a line-of-sight type of communication, meaning that the itmes have to have nothing in between them for it to work. Palm devices use infrared ports better tha any other device I have run across recently. With these, you can beem information between like palm devices. Printers often have them, and laptops or palm devices can print over the infrared port.
