hmm... i have a old P-90 sitting in the closet and i wanted to bring it back to life, what the heck can i do with it? I can run win 95 on but it runs horrible on 98.
Are there any sites now allow downloads of old games that run well in DOS/95 and that would work on a p-90... gah i'm gonna try to squeez all the juice i can out if this ancient peice of history..heh

Ever thought og playing around with linux?

Look what my p90 does for me:

DHCP, WinNT Domain Controler (Samba), DNS (Cacheing), Squid (Proxying), IPchains (Firewall), Printing, emailing (fetch/proc = collect and distribute), Packet forwarding (=internet sharing), FAX2email, email2fax, master logging, Apache (=local web), CD Service (2 drives + 4 images),ftp, backup.

Useless? hardly.

Perfect situation for a router/ firewall system... or a Linux box. Either will be perfectly within the system's capacity. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

You can do a lot with it !. I have an old P133 working real nice and smooth with Win98se.

Got an ADSL connection hooked up to it, use it for surfing and Office work (Word, Excel).

Throw a Voodoo3 and SB AWE 64 in it! Maybe some more HD/RAM.

Here's what I did with my old pentuim (I wish I had a digital camera right now - you "guys" are never gonna believe this)

First Stats:
Pentium 133 Gateway "tank"
hmmmmm. that's pretty much it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

My Project:

I installed Win 98 with a 30 gig drive in it (had to use easy drive to recognize large disks)
purchased a remote universal remote control and a remote sensor from Evation.com (http://www.evation.com/irman/index.html)
purchased a 20x4 LCD screen from EIO.com (http://www.eio.com) and mounted it in the front. Wired it to the printer port to output songs played by winamp http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Use the remote control to completely power windows and Winamp via a plugin I found on the net.
And last but not least pack the thing with MP3's, and set it up to automatically boot to the playlist and start playing them in random order. From here on out the remote takes over. I even have a "telephone like" search function via the remote keys 1-9, so I can virtually go to anysong in my library via my remote control http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Oh, lets not forget the 6" neon light I just purchased to decorate the black painted (flat-black) box I have to match my stereo equipment.

Am I crazy or do I just have a lot of time on my hands. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Gary (I'll try to get some pictures of it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

wow.. that sounds sweet.. but how is it fast enough to do all that work, woundn't you get a little bit of skipping? and by the way would winamp play mp3 "even" smoothly with out skipping on da p90?

aznlurkerz,

I can't speak for your pentium 90, but my pentium 133 (not much faster) runs all of this fine. You would just have to experiment. I forgot to mention I am also running "pcanywhere" set to "autodetect" So I can log up to it anytime an change something via my network. I have yet to have a mp3 skip on me, if it does it's because there is a bad recording.

I was able to dig out my old web cam that I hardly ever use (you will soon see why) and took some pictures of it for those of you who may be interested in checking it out. I appologize in advance for the bad picture quality but at least you can get an idea of what I built.

As you can see the LCD display outputs both the song file name and has a graphic equalizer, It also gives track #, volume, shuffle, and song running time.

I am not going to lie to you this took me a very long time to build, so if you decide to, be prepared. I love it, I use it everyday to listen to my tunes http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Here's the link.

Have fun,

deltaf508 that is really a great project there, perhaps if you had the time one day you could post/send us the instructions on how to build your own ?? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

That would be very highly appreciated until the end of time http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I'll get a better camera and get some more detailed pictures when I get some more time. I'll also post some instructions later. I will tell you that it takes some degree of inginuity as no project will turn out exactly the same. But that's what makes it fun http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I already have plans to make more as soon as I can find more older machines people are willing to donate http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Estimated cost for the one I built was about $200 or so since I got the computer for free http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

More to come. When I do post instructions I might do it on another post...Somthing like "Instructions for building your own Digital MP3 Jukebox" So keep a look out http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I have a Centaur 233 undercloked to 133. I use it as file and printer server under eCS. But any os may do. ( win**: schedule regular reboot each 2 days at 2 o click in the morning http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I use this machine to play my MP3 too.

I is really comfortable to have a safe place where all the important personnal files and archive are safe. I can play like I want on my machine without risk!

Note: As I wanted the machine to be as fail-safe as possible, I didn't wanted to have fan. In my idea, the mechanical part are the biggest risk on a computer: Power fan, cpu fan, Hard Drive. The old Centaur is really a cold processor. With underclocking it and a big cooler, there is no need for fan anymore. I disconnected the fan of the power, and keep the computer box open. It didn't crash for 2 month, playing mp3 continiously....

I also installed SmartOffice and StarOffice, in order to be able to work if ma "regular" machine didn'r support something I did http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

In the future, I plan to use this machine as firewall.

I supposr that a 133[MHz] is near, or lower, the power of a iP90.

You can do a lot with a iP90 class machine: Internet, music (simple), Office working, and even some 3D with AutoCAD or 3DStudio. OK, for AutoCAD and 3DS, you may have to wait sometimes, but it is still enjoyable. Just need some memory...

If you run Win9x, you should optimise your machine by doing these things (non-exhaustive list!)
- Put in system.ini :
[vcache]
MaxFileCache=XXX
MinFileCache=XXX
Where XXX is about 1/4 the total memory of your machine. But I put no more that 20480.
See "www.emulators.com"
- Avoid any program to start at startup, except these few you really want.
Have a look in "Start"-"Programs"-"Accessories"-"SystemTools"-"System Informations".
Then choose "Tools"-"Coniguration Utility".
Then choose "Startup" and remove anything except what you want. I just keep "System Tray".

My Win98 is in french, I tryed to translate..

Good luck!
