Howdy,
I was given an old NT server. I want to put Win 98 on it. It has SCSI drives in it and I have never worked with SCSI. If I put Win 98 on it do I have to configure the drives or will the pc pick it up like IDE?
If I do need to configure it do you know of an Idiots guide to SCSI on the web? Will I need drivers for it?
Thanks
Gerry

Assuming the drives are on a SCSI controller with boot capability, the installation onto a SCSI HDD will work fine. You will need to check whether W98 then installed a driver for the SCSI card - if not, you need to do that afterwards. Just like with IDE stuff.

Win98 is handy in it's ability to install an operating system before the drivers for the SCSI adapter are installed. WinNT/2000/XP require that you install the drivers beforehand or you will get nowhere.
Peter is right - just install Windows, then your motherboard chipset drivers and check Device Manager afterward to see is the SCSI controller drivers are present. If not, go fetch them on the web. ;)

Thanks Doc.
I've decided to learn networking so I built a server out of old parts and put Win2k server on it. I have since learned that XP HE can't join a domain so I'm going to put Win2k on the old server instead of Win98. My wifes pc runs Win98 and I've gotten it to connect to the server.
When I was given the old server I didn't think to get the software for it so it'll be Monday before I can get the chipset and SCSI drivers.
Take care and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Bill, thanks for the article it has really helped but I think I keep getting tripped up here
In the Control-Panel, select the
System icon:
(or right-click "My Computer" on the desktop
and select Properties)
Select the tab : Computer Name
Make sure, that the name of the
Workgroup is defined EXACTLY
the same as your Domain name
(not the name of the Domain Server ! )
How do I find out what the domain name is on my XP machine?
Thanks,
Gerry

There is no domain name on XP Home. You can only enter the domain name in the WORKGROUP selection. Please read the article again.

Thanks Bill,
I guess I was a bit tired when I read that the first time. I made sense after a bit of sleep.
The only way I was able to make it work was to install Netbeui. However when I did that it would take over my IP configs and I would loose my Internet connection. Guess I'll have to break down and upgrade to xp pro.
I appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Gerry
