Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : compressing a AVI file to burn it to cd
I am new to video capturing and I am trying to compress a 3.99gig avi file down so I can burn it to cd. But I don't want to lose the quality if possible. What kind of software works best? I am using the software that came with the card 3dfx tv to capture video but it only lets me capture in avi format.Any sugestion would be great.
if you had installed the Divx codec, you would have been able to capture to this compression under AVI. However all you need to do know is just find a Divx convertor, sorry I have no links for you as I am at work, aside from http://www.dixv-digest.com there should be something here for you.

This should get you going http://www.vcdhelper.com/
you will have to convert to mpeg to get it
smaller, and may have to use two CD's to doit.
Also there is Flask (http://go.to/flaskmpeg) ..which offers even greater compression. You will definitely lose some quality, but if done right.it's acceptable
There is no visual difference with mpeg/divx. If there is, then divx is better.
If you compress with divx to the same size as vcd (this is 2cds) you get to use compression of something like 3000kb/s (which is the maximum).
If you have two files you need to compress and need to fit them on the same disk (this is, you have eg. a movie you made into two avis and then compress it into divx) get the project divx (with this you can merge two divx avis together, thus eliminating the need to swap files with wmp6.4.
Flask is easy to use... http://go.to/vcdgalaxy might also be of help =)

I myself capture with Virtual Dub and also use it to compress the AVI file to DivX.
it takes some tweaking but it works good for me.
I recently captured "Enemy of The State" which was 2:10:00 long and it took 6.5 Gb and compressed it to 1.1Gb Divx.
Hope it helps

Blink from RadGametools.com
Ok I tried several of the programs listed so far and have more to try. I used one called avi2vcd it worked ok but was really slow it compressed a 3.99 gig avi file to 148 meg mpg and the quality looks good still.

Its gonna be slow---set it up and goto sleep for the night, DivX is my choice...

i thought Divx was just a codec not a compressor
Correct me if im wrong

Is there a way to capture a 21/2 hr. movie and compress it to fit on one cd without major quality loss? If so what is the best way to do this? I want to capture video's to keep but I don't want to eat up all of my hard drive in the process. I only have a 20 gig drive and Video seem to take large chunks of space at a time.
Ground, doesn't codec expand to compressor-decompressor http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Mds, Sure you can, if you have a capture card that doesn't capture in raw avi (this is the file format that takes a lot of space. like gb/4min etc.)
I capture in asv2 format (this is the native format of asus vivo cards) and it makes at best quality about 7gb/2h. (remember the 2gb avi file size limit (virtualdub claims to have a way to go around it)). Thus, you can encode the avi file to smaller size and - if you have multiple files - join them with projectdivx (I'm sure there are other joining proggies but this one is the best in my experience).
2½ hours of real time movie should look fine fitted on a 700mb cd. But, in a case of such long movie I would recommend two cds. The bitrate would fall to something like 500video/96audio.. Acceptable qualities are made beyond 700kb/128kb.
