Does anyone know why Norton seems to bring up virus warning windows one after the other when it detects a virus. Once you click to close the warning window it brings up another one and so on and so on.

Also I have used a program called easy cleaner to find duplicate files on my system. It has found many Norton virus definition files all dated months ago. Do you think I could delete these old DAT files and just keep the most recent ones or does Norton require all of them to work?

heres an example of what i mean

Duplicate files.....
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\20030219.018\catalog.dat 1367 DAT File 2003/02/19 17:00
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\tmp2.tmp\catalog.dat 1367 DAT File 2003/02/19 17:00
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\tmp4D.tmp\catalog.dat 1367 DAT File 2003/02/19 17:00
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\tmp6.tmp\catalog.dat 1367 DAT File 2003/02/19 17:00
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\tmpA.tmp\catalog.dat 1367 DAT File 2003/02/19 17:00

It would appear to me that all of those DAT files are duplicates.. are they the same size?...if so, I would believe you could delete all but 1. The file possibly covers one or more specific virii, and if all of those DAT files are removed, the NAV probably would not catch that virii if it happens your way.

I have used NAV a long time, and I have never had it do what you are describing. Can you uninstall it and reinstall?...could be a SNAFU in the application somewhere.

Be very careful when deleting duplicates. Delete the wrong one and you won't be able to get into Windows to undo it.

I don't trust any application to clean up duplicates. I would suggest a bigger hard drive.

Hard drive space isnt my problem. I just thought that if I didnt need them I may as well get rid of them. Perhaps I will leave them there instead. I have already uninstalled and re-installed Nortons as I had an error and was prompted to do so.

Any takers on the first part of my question?

Yes but surely Nortons doesn't need to continually bring up the warning window, especially after I have already acknowledged the message by clicking OK the first time. Does this happen to anyone else with Nortons?

Yes it does - when Norton can't repair the file. It means that further measures are necessary.

The repeated warning used to happen to me when I used to use Norton AV.. Always to tell me that the prob couldn't be fixed... blah blah blah..

Do an online search for that virus and you'll prolly get some feedback on how to get rid of it..

I( was able to get rid of the virus without any problems. I just wanted to know why Nortons kept the warning creen coming constantly.

I have read a lot of posts about AVG being very good, but do you think its worth getting rid of Nortons for?

Are you still getting the warning? Where does Norton say it is?

Norton AV did it's job - it notified you. Keep that in mind. As far as AVG goes, it plays well with Norton. You can use both.

The only time I had NAV give me the time after time warning was for Welchia. Those warnings become a real PITA fast....lol :D

As for all those tmp files you've got in your VirusDefs folder, you can probably get rid of them all. I'd do it manually rather than letting your program do it.

Here's a shot of all I've got in that folder. The dated folders are daily updates. Before I ghost the drive, I delete all the dated folders except for the newest. (they're about 8.5M apiece)

What version of Norton do you use?
This is what I do with 2003...

Browse to the file...right click on it, then choose scan with Norton AV.

Then...it'll give you the option to quarentine it.

Open NAV, go to reports, delete it from there.

As mentioned though...use caution to be sure you're not deleting a critical file...
