Before I decided to build a new system, I took my mom's old one apart and put it back together just to make sure I could.

One problem, the floppy doesnt work and I cant install from CD-ROM so I HAVE to get the thing working.

Things I've already checked:
1. Correctly seated ribbon cable to both mobo and floppy (yes, the red line on ribbon matches pin 1 at both mobo and drive).
2. Power suppy connected to floppy (the drive light used to always be on when I had ribbon backwards, so I know power is getting to drive).

Everything else seems to be working, and I wore a static band to ground myself so I didnt fry anthing.
I didnt change any of the IDE/floppy master/slave settings and I labeled the ribbons when I pulled them out so I know they are right back where they were before when everything worked fine.

Sorry about long post, but I just wanted to make sure you had all the info instead of saying:

"My computer doesnt work whats wrong?" http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

What else can I check? The more info/ideas, the better. Thanx for help.

You could try that drive in another computer or a new drive in the one your working on to see if that drive has problems. Seems as if you have done everything right.

Is the drive detected in BIOS?

The first screen when computer boots, which says Award Modular BIOS version blah, blah
is the screen where it says:

"Floppy disk(s) fail (40)"

The only two options from this screen are <Del> for setup and F1 to continue. If I choose F1, it just says the familiar "Non-System disk, replace and strike any key".

It appears BIOS is fully functional so I can get into there if there is something anyone suggests I try.

I've got the components to my new system on the way now and this is devastating my confidence.

PLEASE SAVE ME!!!!

The only thing I can think of at the moment is what fshanda has already said.. Try the drive in another computer. This will make sure the drive actually works, although there is no reason it shouldnt. I wouldnt worry, the worste thing that could possibly happen is you need a new floppy drive, which is no big deal at all! You won't have to save up money to get one. You say "I've got the components to my new system on the way now and this is devastating my confidence" ....If you got everything back together but the floppy drive, your confidence should not be devastated... If you got that far you did good http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
