I am curious as to the certificates that members here hold. I don't mean for this to be a bragging thread, just a place to post our combined knowledge. So what certs do you have and which ones are you working on?

I currently have under my belt an A+ and a CIW Associate. I am currently persuing the CIW master designer track http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Working towards A+, but wife says I'm just plain certifiable! I'm not sure how to take that when she says it with a crooked smile.

I have built several home computers for friends and relatives and done some home networking.

Okay... let me ask this... I'll be a senior in a 4-year university this upcoming semester, and my major is Computer Science. Is it really worth my while to get certified in different things? And if so, what?

card_magic: Why these certifications exist:

Certs are proof of real world practical knowledge. A CS degree is a fine and wonderful thing, but you can get one without ever cracking the case on a PC. Employers need to know that a potential employer can make non-functioning PCs work, upgrade PCs, make intelligent purchasing decisions, etc.

A voc-tech school diploma - before A+ - didn't tell a potential employer anything, unless he had hired people from that school before. The A+ cert is a way to standardize the training people get in computers. If an employer sees an A+ cert on your resume, he knows that regardless of where you got your training, you meet a known standard.

In Re Micro$oft certs: M$ wanted to eliminate the help desk. By creating certs, they developed an army of individuals who do what the help desk does. And they are right there where the computer and user are. You are doing Bill & his buds a favor by getting an MS cert. Unfortunately, Bill pays the favor back by retiring the certs at a later date.

Finally: If you are a wheezerous old geezer of 46, like me, certs prove that you are still capable of studying, learning, and have the discipline to finish what you start.

None currently, although I have been gathering learning materials for the certs that I know of. Just from reading this thread thus far, I just learned about the CIW line of certs. I am also pondering how to finance all these cert tests. The ones by CompTIA are cheap compared to the others, so a question would be if there is some alternative ways to finance these certs other than paying full price per test out of pocket... (waay too poor here, working a min wage job, but wants to be able to prove to others that i know my stuff, like potential future employers, and self esteem).

Nothing yet. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Starting in a couple weeks I will be attending the local college in the mornings to start A+ training! (Everything is free, except for when I take the test-Books, teachers, school software, etc.) -- It should be fun!

So you should all be receiving more questions from me starting around September!

CCNA Routing and Switching, working on MCP then I'll probably shoot for the MCSE, A.C.E. certfified personal trainer, blackbelt in shorin-g-ryu, ASE AutoBody Master.

My (current) boss doesn't look to highly on the certs though. He's more of a results type of guy. "Bill, this is broke, fix it" I gotta say, more sticks in my head that way than studying for any cert!

My ultimate goal is CCIE WAN. (yes I know I have to start with the CCNA WAN) Oh man, I can't wait to get a crack at the lab. How much real world experience do you guys think it will take?
