Hi folks. I was wondering if anyone might be able to offer some advice, as I'm at a loss right now.

The machine in question is a Micron I purchased in 2001.

After repeated problems in the operating system (ME), I decided to wipe it clean with a reformat.

I've reformatted and installed all of the system drivers twice, but the same problem keeps persisting: any sort of file transfer is immensely slow.

Attempting to burn CD's, copying files from one drive to another, etc is all subject to a tremendous lag (7 mins for a 400mb file swap).

It's a 1.4 ghz AMD, with an Aurora(?) mobo.
The HD is a 60GB IBM, IDE ATA 100.

I've attempted the solutions in this forum for enabling DMA, but to no avail.

I assume that the factory drivers that Micron supplied me with aren't setting up the IDE bus correctly (and nor are the ones on the factory website).

My tech support expired long ago, and my web searches as of the past 8 hours have proved to be fruitless.

Any suggestions? I'd GREATLY appreciate any insight!

Thanks much,
John Bloxom

Have you installed the motherboard chipset drivers? Look here in the Motherboard section:

You may want the BIOS update too. You want the one dated the latest.

In the future, please give us the PC model number.

Oh - it's quite possible that the drive may have bad sectors too.

Yeah, I've updated the BIOS as well... Nothing seems to be working.

My machine's specs can be accessed at http://support.buympc.com/apps/complist.asp?SerialNo=2978973-0001

Thanks a bunch,

John

Check if DMA is enabled in your BIOS settings. Check your HD for problems with IBM's Drive Fitness Test (http://www.hgst.com/downloads/dft32_v350.exe). Also, test your memory (http://www.memtest86.com)

I recently had a similar problem driving be batty. Just on a lark I changed the video card and it took off like a bandit! Might try a diff. video card at least temporarily.
