Been looking round the shops at them but now I'm just confused.
What's with all the +/- rubbish?
Now if I were to get one could someone advise me as to which one? And if it would be worth having another CD/DVD drive to copy from or just the single drive?
Thanks:t

No sense in repeating ourselves:

you don't need a second drive, but it would be convenient.

I just bought a liteon dvd burner.
It's important to get a burner that will burn both dvd+ and dvd-.
I bought the liteon LDW-411S, it burns both standards as well as all the CD formats including high density cd-r/rw.
Liteon does have a newer faster model iif you want the latest/fastest. The LDW-811S, it burns at 8X rather than the 4X of the 411S.(I'm happy with the lower speed unit 'cause of the great price, 148.00 bucks.)
As for having a DVD player, My system came with a DVD player so I'll be able to do straight burns.
This is a desirable feature though not a essential one.(If you don't have a player you'll need alot of HD space,50gb, to do a copy of a dvd.
You'll also need a good bit of ram.(the 411S calls for a minumim of 250 megs of ram.
The good thing about the liteon over the other brans is doesn't require as fast a system.(The HP burners I looked at needed 200mghz or more cpu speed than the liteon and none burned dual format.(dvd+ and -)

The only thing about the 811s though is that the 8x burn is only for the +R media. The rest of the burn speeds are the same as the 411s. And, so far I haven't seen any 8x DVD+R discs.
But, the 8x would be really useful for creating Data DVD+R dvds.

Thanks for the info on the 811s inregards to the 8x burning speed only being for +.
Sounds like they're trying to get everone to shift to the + media only.
Only time will tell if the market will embrace the + media. one things for sure the price will have to come down a bit for me.
The thing I like about the liteon's is the software bundle, especially the data backup utility. It verifies all backups on RW's and corrects any errors.
I just backed up 4gigs of files in less than 15 minutes at 4x with not one error.
Not even Roxio platinum could do this with my old cd burner.

In simple terms, its media format.
DVD+r or DVD-r, if you have a DVD burner that can burn both +/- then you don't have to worry about anything.
As for DVD players (the ones you connect to the tv), these vary. Some can play +/-, while others can only play -.

More DVD players play -r than +r discs.

That might be true, but I have yet to find a DVD player that won't play movies on +R media.

I agree...with fist...
I've read + is the more advisable format now...
but, dual formats are so cheap...doesn't really matter.
I've yet to see a DVD player my + didn't work on...tried at least 6 of 'em...
Plus...the new 8X burners only burn that speed in +

+/- it doesn't matter as long as it works.
