AntiVir (http://www.micro.com/antivirus.html) for antivirus, simply because it's free, easy on the resources and updated more often than AVG. For a firewall, either ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp) or Outpost (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/). Personally I prefer ZoneAlarm, but there are some people who have problems running it with LANs. Never troubled me :t

Zone alarm is good, just keep the free version though, if you upgrade it gets kinda glitchy

AVG for your antivirus and Outpost or Sygate PF for your firewall. ZA, Norton Firewall, and PC-Cillin are junk

 complete garbage is your constant bashing of ZA. :)

you say you were going to trash it in your maintenance article but you didn't want to offend anyone. I think it's time you made an official thread on, "Why ZA sucks" .

Who gives at rats **** if anyone is offended!

FYI.......I use 4.0 pro (I'm behind a router too) & I'm not offended at all.

I also recommend the free version to all my clients.....I also have it installed on my technically challenged father & brothers machines............no problems at all.

I just wanna hear some official reasons on why it sucks.

So please educate us with your vast knowledge on this program.

P.S. I'm not trying to start any **** with you either. I just want the facts. I hope your disdain for the program is no ford vs. chevy or coke vs pepsi.

Networking with it as absoloute nightmare in contrast to just about every other firewall i've ever used, whats more if your networkign via ICS you are forced to go and pay money for 'pro' as the standard edition doesnt like ICS, and even then you'll need to be bloody lucky to get it running properly.

Older versions were horrific to get off a machine, with the ZA uninstallation being responsible for the wrecking of numerous machines.

In addition to this ZA reminds me very much of NAV in that it seems far too chubby and resource hogging for what it does when you compare it to the alternatives, its also not the most configurable of firewalls and in terms of features pales into insignificance next to something like Outpost

Ok jack, but how about that AntiVir that fishybawb suggested. I already tried it and its pretty good. It found a Wachia/Nachia Worm that I had, however it couldnt manage to repair it or give me a description of the virus. Would you also reccomend AVG over AntiVir?

Why don't you give it a try and then decide for yourself, AVG's free too :)

http://www.grisoft.com/

Try booting into safe-mode and then running AntiVir to get rid of the worm(s).

My favorites are Norton AV and ZoneAlarm. I also run AdAware 6 (which isn't an AV program but often finds and cleans off trojans that Norton and ZoneAlarm do not find, based on my own experiences).

With all of your 65 posts, how could you possibly know that we have been dealing with ZA problems here for years? Whether or not ZA is **** is immaterial when Sygate is so much better and easier to deal with.

I have to agree w\ Jakk, ZA both sux & blowz! I have (but no longer use) Pro v.3 and had previous free versions, every now and then it would ramp my cpu usage up to 100% until I killed it! It constantly lost its settings and required reconfiguring\retraining on numerous occasions. I feel there is an element of spyware about the program. Sygate PF is more than its equal IMO and it's free too!

very intuitive BPB.

 Your one to talk about being confrontational. I've been coming to this forum for a long time.....long b4 I even registered. You can be quite rude & grumpy towards members here. Of course not the regulars but you can be quite snotty to people when you deem necessary.

You attempt to equate my post count with my knowledge of ZA. Are you seriuos? ********rattles BPB's head********* HELLO! Is there anyone home? How hard is it to realize that a low post count has nothing to do with ones knowledge of a particular program. Not real hard in my book but apparently quite difficult in yours. I mean, it tells me that I have better things to do with my time than sit on a computer 24/7 & rack up a soon to be 27,000 posts. I would be embarassed!

It is just plain STUPID that people around here constantly say that ZA is ****....... or blows...... or sucks etc. etc. If you & Jakk started telling everyone that AMD sucks, all the little followers on here would be rebuilding their rigs with P4's starting tomorrow.

Of course there's ZA horror stories out there. It is the most popular software firewall on the market that even the average end user knows about. So people like Strawbs (100% cpu usage, hehe) install it on their system which is already completely hosed with Virus & Spyware & guess what???? It doesn't work right, go figure.

me- 3 pc's & laptop....linksys wrt54g....ZA pro 4.0 on all....never 1 problem.

Pssssst.....I run a P4!

my linksys router problably sucks too! Should I have gotten Netgear? please help!

It's all relative, isn't it? I can only judge by the percentage of ZA problems and the stubbornness of them. I have see a lot of ZA pain in three years here.

ZA is relatively bad. We'll try to keep your relatives out of the discussion.

BTW - I have earned my grumpiness and I will not apologize for it. I do more good by accident than the "lightweights" here such as yourself do on purpose. There is a hierarchy here - even if I wasn't a moderator. You get respect the old fashioned way - you earn it.

I could argue similarly that its only the stupid people around here who keep talking ZA up to be the badgers nadgers, something it most certainly isnt

I remember when Imitator :p first signed up here and bulldozed his way thru' half a dozen disputes! I asked him back then if he was th "Black Viper" in disguise because he uses that web-site as his bible!

Some ppl never learn, Some things never change! Ignore him, he'll get bored and go away.

Try this anti-virus program. All the major free firewalls basically all do the same thing about equally well. Some have add-blocking software etc. thrown in. Ones that are more configureable take more knowledge on the users behalf.

I agree 100%. Although I've never used Kaspersky it gets real good reviews over here:

http://forums.spywareinfo.com/

As far as firewalls go cdroman hit the nail right on the head. I never stated once that ZA is the "Badgers Nadgers". My point is that ZA is not the "Devil" as lots on here make it out to be. It is novice friendly & is basically set it & forget it. Perfect for noobs with excellent protection.

I realize that other software firewalls allow for more fine tuning as well as use less system resources BUT that does not mean ZA is ****!

NAV is a resource hog.....is it ****? Of course not. It also gets corrupted quite often from what I see on a daily basis. Of course it's due to user lack of knowledge, same with the ZA horror stories.

Best wishes..... Everyones best pal,
