Hi all,
I'm building a new system and would like a few opinions if anyone has similar. I'm selling my AsusA7A266 Tbird1.2 for this:
Gigabyte GA-7DXR
Athlon 1.33 AYHJA Y
2-IBM 40GB 7200rpm (for raid 0)
256 Corsair PC2400 cas2
Enlight case (ditching the power sup for a Emermax 350watt)
Lite-on 16x10x40 CDRW
Globalwin CAK38 CPU heatsink x fan
Klipish ProMedia 2.1 THX 3 piece speaker system
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card.
3DFX Voodoo 3 AGP (I have a Radeon 64DDR now but it's being sold with the ASUS system)

I had the Voodoo laying around from my old P3733 system, and I'll use it until Radeon 2 comes out in Sept. Well, I hope this thing kicks ***, cause even for an AMD system this stuff ain't that cheap. Will still probably need $225 for the Radeon 2 when it comes out. If anyone has anything similar let me know how it's working for you so far. ThanX !

What's this -> "Lite-on 16x10x40 CDRW"

Never heard of that brand.

Was about to say something about the crappy video card but see you have that covered http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

The Lite-On is kind of like a generic, but it has burn proof and I have yet to make a coaster with the 12x one I have in the ASUS system I have now. They are cheap ($97) for the 16x model at Newegg.com.

Looks like a pretty good system. I was cringing when i saw your choice for the video card, then i recovered when i got to the end of your message and saw you had that covered.

From what i hear, the lite-on's are no worse than the plextor or the iomega drives with burn-proof. They're all excellent drives. I have an iomega myself and successfully managed to make only one coaster. And i had to try REALLY HARD!! Don't ask. Whenever i buy something new, i have to test it to the max before i decide to keep it.

BTW, IMHO the Creative Soundblaster live 5.1 is a much better sound card. Just my personal biased opinion.

Thanx for the replies: From what I understand the Iomega is a rebadged Plexor so if it is cheaper(haven't looked yet) it's a good deal. I'll check out the Soundblaster. I've heard good things about the 5.1 and the Santa Cruz so it's a toss up. I have till Tues. to decide when I order.

I've had bad luck with ATI cards in AMD systems, you may want to look into a GeForce 2 GTS or even a GeForce 3. I like the idea of stripped drives.

Your system looks really nice. If your willing to spend a little bit more I'd suggest you get the Creative LIVE! 5.1 series. I have one and its great for everything from games to sound editing to mp3 encoding.

Just a small question from me, what's a coaster?

A coaster is a CD-R that was unsuccessfully burned. It had a buffer underrun or something. It isn't good for anything except a "coaster" to put your drink on. Or, if you wanna see something cool, put it in the microwave for 1 second.

The silver coating on the cd does a spider web effect.
