Demilitrized Zone, a computer or small subnetwork that sits between a trusted internal network, such as a corporate private LAN, and an untrusted external network, such as the public Internet.

that's a definition. what it does exactly is not mentioned.

i can say it's a firewall from that definition, and i know it's not.

can someone be kind and post what it does ?!

A DMZ is mainly used to give public access to certain servers, while still protecting the main network. you would have this setup:

internet - firewall1 - dmz servers - firewall2 - corporate network

Both your users and public users would have access to the servers in the dmz, but the public would not be able to get past that.

Originally derived from the war time term DeMilitarized Zone. On your SOHO router, outside of your private LAN's NAT'd protection.

I agree with the above descriptions. But to help make it a little cleaerer:

The DMZ will house your internet servers such as web and e-mail. These items need to be accesed by the public. The firewalls behind the DMZ protect your internal network from hackers or other trouble makers. The firewalls in front of the DMZ are used to prevent access to services your company does not use.
