AMR Modems are tiny things which are always "Software" modems which require cycles from the CPU to operate.

Usually found on OEM style mobos to make assembly line manufacture of computers faster and "cheaper"

Few people use them, as I've heard.

Yes AMR seemed like it would be popular by PC makers when it first came out. Now it seems that support is diminishing for these devices.

I think AMR went out for these reasons:
1st, it wasn't advertised very much
2nd, power users, who would be the only ones to hear about it, wouldn't by a SoftModem.
3rd, since they aren't popular, home users won't end up with them.
