I'm shopping around for 80 or 120 gig ext. drive. I've been looking at the local shops here and on line. Fry's had some cheap drives called. Accomdata, but?? I saw alot that were returned back on the shelf. I'm looking at Maxtor, WD or Iomega.

It's mostly for video's and music, no backing up. I was looking at Maxtors new one touch as well. And Maxtors online store has the 3000DV 80 gig for $109.00.

Any thoughts?

I've always preferred buying an HDD external case (they're cheap)
so I can swap out hard drives, go larger, etc. - not sure if that is integrated and the 3000DV lets you pop another drive in later on.....

this -link (http://www.htcnetstore.com/inandexhdd.html)
gives you some comparatives (never bought there, just an example).

use pricewatch.com and shop around - and make note as to whether you want or need USB v. firewire

When you consider that an 80GB drive costs $80 and a decent USB eclosure the same, $109 is a steal.

Yep, I agree with you the same BpB, I was checking out the prices on the drives and the enclosures and it was more than Maxtors online price.

For $109, it's a good price. And 80gigs I think will be enough for my needs, mostly to store music.

One thing I noticed, it is a 7200rpm drive. But I didn't see the cache specs on the features. So not sure if it's 2 or 8 meg cache. Would it make a big difference??

Connected through USB? No - a 5400RPM w/2MB cache would be fine.

I think eCost has it for the same price - free shipping.....

thx for the tips!

Also I never heard of htcnetstore?? Some prices were good, but it looks like they build their own external drives with what ever hard drive you wish?

The only way that they build their own is if the store is in China. If you're smart, you won't buy anything that you have never heard of before.

So right Bill! I never buy from companies I don't know, dealt with, checked them and check other buyers ratings. I've always used Newegg, Mwave, Axiontech, Meritline, etc.

But I checked out Maxtors online store and I bought it from them for $109.99 a good deal and I know who I'm buying from.
