Hello. I have $300 to spend on a new computer system. I want to setup linux on it. I was thinking an AMD Duron 800 w/ 128MB RAM. Onboard VIDEO and SOUND are Great for now (I can always upgrade later) and i want excellent price-effectiveness. I only want a CD-ROM drive (or a cheap CD-RW), no monitor keyboard, mouse, etc.

Thanks!

You will need:

1. Duron 800 mhz cpu - $75
1. 128 mb PC133 ram - $26
1. Socket A m/b with onboard video ram - Gigabyte GA-7ZMM (sound and shared video)-$145
1. ATX case - any $60
1. IDE cdrom - Creative CDrom 50x - $45

= $351 (and thats Canadian)so you should be able to pick all that up for under $300 with tax in the US.

sixpac is right all that stuff is pretty cheap probably $20 or $30 for ram
a new duron 800 costs about $60
if you cant find a cheap mobo with sound and video you could pick up some cheap cards and you could probably get under you budget
just look at pricewatch or somewhere like that and im sure you can come up with something http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Does that gigabyte board have expansion slots? I would pick up the ECS K7-VZA board, and throw a cheap video card into it. You don't have to play with onboard video or anything. I know I get them for $69, so pricewatch is probably going to be under that.

what about a hard drive? or a floppy? and will you want a NIC?

I'm not getting that Gigabyte motherboard listed in the original things... I looked at the specs, and I can't remember what it is (and some reviews) and it looks like that board really sucks...

In response to later e-mails: I would like a 20GB or less (10GB is great) HD, no NIC (have one) and yes, a floppy... (the floppy and cables, etc. are not included in the price, as those cost just about pocket change)

Definately (for the prices in the US) shared video does *suck*.Then go for a cheap MX card (Geforce) and then I would get the Epox EP-8KTA2 with UltraDMA-100 EIDE 200MHz FSB 3 DIMM (ATX form factor) 6 PCI, 1 ISA, & 1 AGP with DiP Switch and is only $74 usd at price watch.

It seems to me that unless you get their Deal of the Day, you get ripped off by ComputerGeeks.com

Cody, ComputerGeeks do NOT suck, they have deals galore IF you know what you're shopping for in the first place.

However, the geeks do specialize in older stuff, some used, some new they are good for the OEM style computer builder not really much for the power user.

Check www.newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com) for your mobo, the Abit KT7-E is a powerhouse mobo

Get a cheap video card from the geeks to get ya by until you can afford a good 64mb Geforce with DDR memory.

Stay on the lower end of the Hard Drives as the 40gb and larger are reputed to be having teething prooblems.
www.buy.com (http://www.buy.com) has some decent pricing on small hard drives, or if you like to gamble, choose a vendor from pricewatch and order with "unknown" shipping charges.

That was a warning to CHECK the shipping first and if they won't give it to you without "joining" or revealing CC info, tell them where to go.

newegg has some killer pricing on CPU's as well as mobo's, the pricing on HD's is just so-so, watch the geeks for deals on HD's as well.

I got some Maxtor 10gb 7200 HD's for $52.00 each from the geeks.

The case from the geeks is sturdy as well, using a Master Card will reduce the pricing of ANY non"Geek Specials" by 10% if you put in the RED box at checkout->

lotsa luck

And make sure you don't forget the cooling fans either. They'll cost you some, but it will definitely be worth it.

Changed my mind. I think I will pick up an old P200 ($50) for my Linux Webserver (light) and just save the money to upgrade or for a future system...

Thanks guys!
