this is hubby of ms draboo(draboo). somehow i deleted drivers for soundcard. then reloaded them, but in the meantime, switched the speaker wire to another socket on back of puter. could hear crackling sound when twisting volume knob so i thought all was well. anyway, after reloading and windows driverupdate, and switching to the correct socket, we have noise again. now g-daughtrer can hear barbies music while making her over! many thanks to all of you who so quickly responded! brad(draboo)

Do you mean the little speaker down in the system tray?

If it is just the task bar then go to Control panel select multimedia and enable the "show volume contol on the task bar" under the audio tab.
