Shells that is. I just finished reading this article (http://www.ntcompatible.com/article3.shtml) , and now I'm curious especially on item numbrer 10. I would love to give windows a complete makeover, but I don't want to FUBAR it at the same time. Has anyone done this before? Thoughts and suggestions are of course always welcome.

I've changed the shell quite a few times. Its fun. you can mess up your system slightly if you mess up trying to uninstall a shell though. (nothing a re-install wont fix) my personal favorite is astonshell (www.astonshell.com) too bad you have to pay for it.

I tried this and I found that DesktopX is fantastic http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif. It is too cool plus you can toggle back and forth between your original. I love it!!!

p.s. Did I mention I like it?

Well, I got it to work in win98, but 2000 gave me grief. I think the instructions on how to edit the registry were wrong. Oh well, I like it, but it'll take some getting used to.

You can also take a look at Talisman2 at WWW.Lighttek.com (http://WWW.Lighttek.com)
It's a fully customizable GUI right down to what buttons are where.

I just like the way the reviewer used the femmes. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Have played around with this before, you can get nice nice results, but I always found that the progs I used for this used up too much ram and resources and sometimes made my system unstable.

I tried using the LiteStep stuff but it seemed a little to hookie for me to have to change all of that stuff in the STEP.RC file. I then tried DESKTOPX and that was so easy. I is an .exe and it works great. I would send a screen shot but I am not for sure how to do that... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif

Do these shells take up more system resources than the standard shell in lets say Win98se ?.

DesktopX is a program so is does use a little bit of resource but I really couldn't tell any performance drop. Like I said, it's something for fun...
