I like to play old dos games on my PC. I have Windows 98 and I think I'll keep it that way as long as I can (I'm not to crazy about that WinME dos emulator business). A lot of my old, old dos games need sound blaster. My on board sound can emulate soundblaster in a dos box, the problem is the on board AC97 sound doesn't have an FM synthesizer (OPL2, OPL3 etc.) I want to upgrade to SB Live's 4 speaker surround but I also want to know if it is compatible with pure dos and if it is equipped with an FM synthesizer or do I have to buy an old SB pro in my ISA slot for that?

My SBlive works just fine in DOS.
no problems here, perhaps your should try upgrading your drivers, mobo and soundcard.

the standard sb live setup has a dos emulation which works just fine for what you are talking about. the only pain is that it means your sound card uses 2 irq's.
k.
All I want to know is does the SB Live have an FM synthesizer? Does anyone here know what I'm talking about?

Sorry to be off topic, but one thing that cracked me up about SB Live is its not "Sound blaster compatible" http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
In Linux it doesn't find a sound blaster compatible sound card, nor can it accept a SB comp driver!
There are of course drivers for it now, but wasn't always that way!
Hmm don't know about the FM thing though
I did a few searches around www.creaf.com (http://www.creaf.com) (creative labs)
http://www.soundblaster.com/compare/compare_specs.asp?region=1&what=specs&products=13&products=15&products=14&x=87&y=9
Maybe this info will help?
You will know the lingo better than I!
It is a comparison of several different types of Live cards, maybe there is something in there that will be what you need!
