When I change my resolution, whether it's just my desktop or vice city, the screen position changes. My current resolution is 800x600, but if I change it to 1024x768, the screen position shifts about 1/8 to the right. It will shift differently depending on the resolution. What could be causing this? Here's my system specs:

AOC Flatscreen (not flat-panel) 17"
Powercolor Ti4200 128Mb
Asus A7S333
Athlon XP 2000
512Mb DDR333
Windows XP Pro

if i were you, i would throw away your system because it sux. you need 1 gig of ram, first of all, and neon lights if you want any performance boost at all. IMHO

nothing to worry about.
it might do that even when you change refresh rates.

its a pretty normal thing since most monitors right now support so many resolutions and refresh rates that each setting can be optimized.

i have my optimal setting for my desktops resolution so i get the best use of my realestate. when in games, loosing a bit on a side is not much of an issue.

some displays remember multiple settings for the display that would allow you to set your screen position for more than one resolution but you would have to look into that.

Well the reason I have my resolution set to 800x600 is because my Mom can't read that well when the resolution is higher than that. So that's fine for me, but when I want to play Vice City on 1024x768, the screen position moves 1/8 to the right and cuts off a good amount of screen. My other computer and my neighbor's two computers don't have this problem at all. I tried to look for something that would change my screen position for different resolutions, but I couldn't find anything.

The monitor should have built in controls to adjust the geometry and position. You can try something like powerstrip. ATi has a util in their Control panel for screen adjustment. Not sure if nvidia has one or not. I always use the monitor controls.
