ok guys, Im brand new to this... but I have read quite a few of your posts and I need all the info/ideas I can get.
I just acquired a shuttle hot 649a mb thats dual processor capable. when I got the system it was running a single p3 500 processor and 256 mb pc 100 ram. the system also has onboard scsi that has an 18 gb drive as its primary. After a couple attempts at loading windows server 2003, I read up on the bios and found out the existing bios did not support y2k changes and a few other things so I flashed to the new version. successful flash, all systems go, and windows 2003 loaded beatifully and ran smoothly. I proceeded to update 2003 with all the new stuff, played for a while then shut it down till the next day. I recieved the second p3 processor that day (existing was a sl3cd, new is a sl35e) and proceeded to install it.
up to that point, all smiles. when I tried to boot, the fans came on, the scsi drive spun up, but no beeps, and no drive lights flickered, and no monitor data.
I have tried clearing cmos, removing battery and clearing cmos then replacing battery, putting new battery in, trying different video cards (pci and agp) checking all jumper setttings, completely returning system to configuration that it was prior to new processor. I was extreemly careful to ground to case, and noticed nothing unusual. All to no avail
I need some tips, even to what could have gone wrong
thanks guys

Do you have the manual? Is there a jumper to set? Perhaps you have to make some BIOS setting changes before you put the second CPU in?

I tried to be very careful and I reviewed all of the manual instructions I could find. If you want you can double check me, but I dont think there is any jumper to switch from single to double. In the bios configs there might have been, but I dont think so, hardware wise there wasnt. Either way, I cant get into the system to check now.
here is where I got the manual

Have you updated the BIOS?

Are those two CPUs supposed to work together?

as far as I can tell yes, they match in everything but stepping, and I checked an intel report which lead me to believe that the steppings were compatible. I also read several reports where people were using two completely different processor types on that board with relative success.
on the other hand though, could that have caused the bios to die?

thanks

Remove the board from the case, place it on a soft, non-conductive surface near the case and plug in the ATX power. Leave in the CPU and RAM. Place the vid card in and connect the monitor. Connect the power. Nothing else needs to be connected. Press down hard on the vid card and use your screwdriver to short the POWER BUTTON pins. See if it POSTs.

ok, Ill try the removal testing this afternoon.
until then, one question: what exactly is a matched pair of processors? does it have to be the exact same cpuid as in sl3cd? or can they match parameters? here is the link to the processor specs, they are at the very bottom of the page. could you tell me if this is a matched pair (sl3cd/sl35e) or not?

They seem to be matched pretty well.

Everything I've read and heard says that you should use processors that come from the same lot if possible. I don't know how true this is, it would seem to limit the ability of us folks that can't just go out and buy two Intel procs at the same time but you never know.:t

IT POSTED!!!!!!! must have been shorting on the case... so wierd... Ill keep investigating. also, thanks

I would agree with your statement, but I i read a report in my researching of the topic about someone mixing actual processor types (ie celleron and p3) and getting the 649a board to work. I dont know... if you find any difinitive evidence to support or defend either your or my statements I am all ears

I guess until I have actual experience with a dual proc setup all I can go with is what I've heard and read. Maybe they mean for the least possible problems. Glad it works for you.:t
