I have Xp professional installed on both my home computers...
the gateway 06-450 had a new OS install 2 weeks ago to XP pro.
Everything was fine till yesterday...

now although it recodnized the CDrom/CDRW and the DVD drives and shows the as working...it systematically fails to read good known CD's in eihter drive off and on, on a regular basis...I have unistalled these drives and let XP reboot to reinstall the hardware on boot...no luck...

anyone have such troubles before and found a fix? I hate to do the XP install...and I can't get a good system restore point to load successfully, and not much in MS's knowledge base either

thx in advance

Have you looked for updated drivers for your system on the Gateway site?

If you've installed more than on CD burning application, remove both and reinstall one. Get updates for it too.

tell me how to stack her drive into my comp (both XP now) so I can reach in and retain her old family pics and files...then I can maybe zero write fill her drive and reload 98SE and work up...most old boards will accept XP and then fail later with out chipset or bios upgrades

help guys!!!!!!!!!!

Open the folder on your computer where you want to put her files, open her drive in a seperate window and drag and drop from hers to yours.

well....all in all I got the files saved I wished too from her drive to mine...stacked her drive under mine and all was well till I removed her drive....my system refused to find a primary IDE drive for a long time and finally I got it to reboot .Used the "cable" jumper setting on the back of my drive.....her drive once returned to the gateway now refuses to show an operating system so it wont even boot ....you got me

after stacking the HDDs..it was hard to find out what drives were goin'

flashed the Mobo on mine for the heck of it (first time I done a prom) the a7pro was two years old...and it runs XP pro much better...

tiger direct has a bundle on the palamino core 1900 and a chaintech with norton full system works...am I not suppose to mention websites? let me know

here's a link if no one has been there....for the help you gave me

found it from my friends...searching that old gateway 450P2

http://developer.intel.com/design/chipsets/index.htm

this chaintech 7KJD I just got from Tiger

i have most the manual figured out

palimino core athlon 1900...

The BIOS doesn't have to be flashed.

Check the jumpering on each drive carefully:

http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=136530

IBMs are easy to misjumper.

Remove one optical drive at a time, jumper the other as master and test. Sometimes, one bad drive can cause others to misbehave.
