Our school, North Central College, won't open the 15k or so ports necessary to run FFXI. Does anyone know the servers they're using or the specific or even a range of IP addresses they're using?
If not, does anyone know how I can find this information out? We need to know the specifics in order to allow us to connection. HELP ANYONE

How is it wrong? I am looking for a more specific set of IP addresses or a range of IP addresses that Square is using to host FFXI. If we knew those numbers, perhaps we could make it possible for our campus to play FFXI. The answer must be out there somewhere. What is the name of their Networks?

Look, I'm not interested in a lecture. I want an answer. My question is simple. There has to be a way to play the game by opening up an efficient number of ports, instead of a 15k range provided by the FAQ on playonline.com. I wouldn't be asking if it were illegal to play games on our PRIVATE college campus. Please, don't respond if you're lecturing. I want technical answers, not a parent.
Incidentally, I am making this request, because I have already conversed with the college IT department.

Hey everyone, thanks for reading this so far. I would open teh port specified on the FFXI website, but they specify 15,000 different ports!! Our network won't allow 15,000 ports to open. We need a more specific number.

How about trying just ONE of 15k then.;)

perhaps a link to those 15k ports that they list so one of us could maybe help you out.
Also, perhaps this thread would be better served in the networking forum??

Thank you everyone for continuing to pay attention to and read this thread. The link specifying the information is below:

If you are working through the colleges connection they would have to be the one to open the ports right? I could be wrong on this. Are they will to open ports if needed for this?
It is sad that they still have the beta info up.

The college is willing to support this game and open up ports, but the 15,000 range of ports that FFXI needs open is too large. I am wondering how we can isolate the specific ports FFXI uses and open up perhaps only 1000 ports. I've been tryign to call Square Enix all day inquiring as to what the names of their networks are. No luck so far. If anyone has a similar problem or knows how do to some slick detective work, I'd be more than willing to purchase and mail them a copy of the game, provided the solution is successful.
Again, thanks for all of your attention.

Seems odd that thye need that many ports open. They could have just chosen a couple more.
I am wondering if the game is even worth playing still.

+ Port numbers that may be used by the PlayOnline server group:
-TCP 25, 80, 110, 443 or 50000 - 65535
-UDP 50000 - 65535
Port numbers that may be used...in other words you may use any port from 50000-65535.

Based on some tests, we definately use some ports between the range of 50k - 65k, but how do we find out what specific ports we use in that range so as to avoid having to open up 15k different ports in order to cover them all?

Thats what I was getting at.;) they are saying if you have that port open they will comunicate with it through that port. Not that all of them are used. Its just the port to send and recieve data on the network. I.E. you only need ONE for that one proggy. If your firewall wont open ONE of those ports then it wont go. They are tring to make it easy to connect-not hard. Ergo the 15k diff ports it works WITH. Not needs.:t

P4 Gamer, I hope you read this, as you are generating ideas.
We did a test last week where we opened the first 1000 ports in the range, and unfortunately it did not work to play the game. I know FFXI places you randomly on a specific server. Do you think that if I found which port my personal server is on and opened up that range of ports that I'd be ok? For example...suppose my server was using ports on 56000-57000.
If I found and opened up that range, do you think it'd work then?
Please respond
