To resolve a problem with being able to enable ditital sound playback MS support says to upgrade sound card drivers to WDM Drivers.

WDM stands for Windows Device Manager. Basically you need to hit the manufacturers web site and get the latest drivers for your card. This usually occurs after upgrading to WinME.
