I have a "legacy" system that I put together 3-4 months ago:

Amptron PM598MR Socket 7 board
K62 500 CPU
128 MB PC133 memory
Onboard SIS Video, audio and modem
Maxtor 20 GB 7200 RPM HD

It has been working fine until recently. I was replacing the modem and was going to set the mobo jumper to disable the old one when I carelessly moved the clear CMOS jumper to "Clear" instead. Not realizing I had done this I rebooted the computer, but it wouldn't reboot. PS fan spins, CPU cooling fan spins, drives power up, but nothing else. Black screen, no access of floppy. When I found out what I'd done, I tried the following:

Reseated the memory several times
Tried the mobo outside the case
Used a PCI video card and an ISA video card
Tried 2 other CPU's
Cleared the CMOS, removed battery, unplugged unit and left for several hours

Still black screen and no boot up.

Can somebody offer me some suggestions? I would really appreciate it.

Examine all capacitors for leaking/bulging. If it fails outside of the case, the motherboard is generally a goner. :(

Thanks for the help. I'll check out the capacitors.

BipolarBill,

I didn't see anything out of the ordinary on the capicitors. Would there have been a chance that by booting up with the clear CMOS jumper on I did something to the system Bios?

No, moving the jumper will not damage anything. You have not said that you moved the jumper back. If you have not, put it back.

I'm sorry, I just failed to mention that I had moved the jumper back. I did that early on.

Thanks,

Terrell

Thanks for your help. I'm trying to decide whether to put another $25 into the board. I'll check it out!

By the way, were you trying to flash the bios when yours went bad? One thing that throws me about this is that I wasn't trying to flash the bios. I had only restarted my computer with the jumber set to clear the CMOS.

Terry,

I believe you're right. It might be cheaper just to find another board.

Thanks for your help!
