Anyone out there own an Abit IS7? I was checking a pair of Mushkin Basic 256MB PC2700 memory the other day and they wouldn't operate on dual channel.

They are the same capacity and same rating. I put them in slots 1 and 3 and later tried them in slots 2 and 4 and they still would not work. When I turn the comp on, I hear one POST beep, but then the system just hangs. All the screen shows is my CPU frequency and type.

When I try installing the memory one at a time or if I put them in non-dual channel slots (1+2, 1+4, 2+3) the computer boots up as normal and Windows loads.

All the manual tells me to do is install the matching pairs in slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 for dual channel to work. What could be the problem?

I actually didn't look at the online manual and just checked the one that came with my mobo.

FYI, the part about the memory is on page 25 on the PDF file in the link above.

Have you tried updating the BIOS?

Yeah, it's at its latest version.

I would assume that the motherboard is defective because it's supposed to be as simple as plugging in the memory.

Not all boards work with certain types of mem. If you have a local Fry's try Corsair XMS or Kinston Hyper X. If it works - keep the board - RMA the mushkin.

If it boots normal with one stick then try manually setting the ratio to 4:4 and use cas 2.5 and 2T, relaxed timings - raise DDR volts one notch. See if it boots.
