win 98 screen freeze

My screen freezes, and I am unable to shutdown in the nl way, if there is no activity (mouse, keyboard) on my pc for about 20 mins. This just started after installation of aol 9. I uninstalled and went back to aol 8, but no change. I am not sure if this is a prob w/win98, motherboard, or stupid aol trick. would windows update help? and btw, should one use windows update regularly, anyway? any comments welcome.

Start disabling apps running in the background, type msconfig in the run box go to startup tab and start unchecking all your apps particularly aol see what happens. You can also call aol about it since your paying for there support as well, make them earn there money.
