my mistake, I am not looking for anything illegal. I do own( bought and paid for) games. however i do have kids and grand kids that dont pay for these games ,and have lost several games to lack of care in handling.

I dont beleive backing up your files and or disks is illigel, " crack" may not have been the apropriate term to use, but as previosly mentioned i had all the games i play fully loaded on my pc and didnt have to use the disks to play them. at any rate, I do see your points in the matter and as big jakk said, closed.

again, to any I may have insulted( or abused licencing) I apolagize. sincerly, ward

No harm done! If you are trying to revive some old games due to some problems, then it should be alright.

Cheers...

i dont think its any harm done. Lots of ppl use no cd cracks on their BOUGHT games because they dont want to have the cd in the drive or because sometiems the cd actually slows the games down.

People are sometimes too touchy in these forums when they hear the crack word and get on this big warez trip when its not even stealing.

I agree, BF1942 is a nightmare. I cannot get a CD crack that will let me play it online. It really annoys me when the drive spins up as well. I think the game companies should get rid of the CD check. It's so easily circumvented anyway.

IMO it only shortens the life of your drive, all that disc action for no reason, and if you have loads of games installed like i do, you're always swapping discs.

it's completely craptastic.

So true...It's pretty much "guilty until proven innocent" around here. Oh well.

You know, there are some decent programs out there that allow you to create virtual drives using an ISO image of your game CD. This is perfectly legal (as you have to have the CD to make an image file of it, and it doesn't involve any hacks. This gets around the issue (like Steevo said) in BF1942 with te latest patch of having to switch between the game CD, Road to Rome, or Secret Weapons whenever you connect to a server running one when you have the CD for another in your drive.

One is Daemon Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/portal/portal.php) (freeware)

The other is Alcohol 120 (http://www.alcohol-software.com/) (retail)

Hey cool Tantone, I hate swapping cds in BF1942. I'm going to try out daemon tools when I get home tonight..thanks!

Incidentally. The new 1.5 patch for bf1942 eliminates the need for disc swapping when playing the addons.

Yes, it sure did! And it added a nice new map for multiplayer (anything under 32 players is a waste).

Although, DaemonTools is still quite handy as it doesn't require ANY of your game CD's to be in physically present, as long as you have the HDD space to store all of the images.

Personally I hate CD verification. I lost my SF 2 CD (cd 1) thanks to myself having to leave it out and my little cousin stepping on it. Didn't think of sending the CD's in for 5 bucks for new ones at the time, when I moved, well they got tossed. Now I want to play the game again (but not for 45 bucks) since nothing new is out and I've ran all the old games to death. I generally install CD cracks as soon as they are available now instead of sometimes holding off.

Good idea to make ISO images (of CCD images) for safekeeping. Of course, I'm sure you are doing something similar now after your experience.

CloneCD didn't work?

CloneCD is no longer. Not sure if there is anyplace to download it. I don't believe they were forced to shut down, probably just threats of legal battles (and the resulting costs) so I wouldn't think downloading the software from somewhere else would be illegal.

My understanding is that a 'no CD' hack is not illegal. Unless third party software is banned in the Eula, anyone know if it is?

I haven't read one to see how badly they can rape me and get away with it to find out, but I'd imagine legally, it is illegal, but as for prosecutions happening to those who own the software they are using the cracks for, it is never going to happen. Now those who use it to get pirated games to work, I can see them going after those people sometime eventually, it does seem inevitable - just not anytime soon. Broadband still isn't widespread and fast enough to make going after gaming pirates a profitable venture so to speak. That's why the movie industry is just doing ad campaigns, the files are so large, not many are d/ling them, so not much is truly lost in sales.

I'm going more the on the morality issue which I think most companies would go with, if you own the software legally, you can use the patch long as it doesn't interfere with other aspects other than eliminating the CD.

Yes, everything else is imaged to two hotswap drives (copies on each) incase of failure on one and the loss or screwed CD I still have the ability to get the program or game up again. Just I'm not shelling out 45 bucks for the "Gold" version of SOF2 since I have already had the game and played it several times through, enough that I remember the plot and it has been 6 months or so since I played it last. Nor am I going to spend 3 years on Kazaa, which I don't even have on my comp, to download it. I'll just wait until some worthy games come out and get more studying done in the meantime I suppose. Not what I want to do, but, **** happens.

Ugh, I can relate to you buddy. I lost (in a move) one of the cd's to Medal of Honor and Ghost recon. I have expansion pack disks and one of the two originals... but can't play the games anymore :(

I lost the first disk to SWG over the summer. I had it in the tray, it got removed at some point and placed on a counter, and never saw it again. I don't think disk 1 was the one needeed to play, pretty sure it was no disk or disk 3...either way I wouldn't be playing it now anyways, but still annoying to lose it.

You might try a iso program like winiso that can create a bin or iso file of the cd on your hard drive. Then you can burn the iso or bin or extract it on your hard drive. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

I put a image of every game I buy on the hard drive with Alcohol 120% then use the image to play the game It should work with Halo. I just got Battlefield 1942 and it worked with it and it worked with UT2003 where clone cd wouldn't do it for me.

I used to use Clone CD a lot but it just got worse and worse at making copies that worked, or you have to use cracks anyway.
Even the newer versions didn't help much.
I backup all games that I buy, I had an original (quake 3 I think) shatter in my drive and I've never wanted to take a chance from then on. Especially considering the exorbitant prices of games these days.
Like all copy protection schemes, they only stop people too stupid or needlessly honest from copying.
Just like a car alarm will only deter honest people, a hardened car-thief will be able to get in and drive away in less than a minute.

Except making a backup copy of a game isn't illegal.

I'm sure the game publishers woundl't see it that way.

Much like the RIAA and MPAA would love to see the 'fair use' rule tossed out.
