good question. What did the manufacturer say when you obtained the RMA? Will they repair and return or replace? BTW, this would have been a good question to ask when obtaining RMA.

Dependent upon what 'died'. Most if not all of the data can probably be accessed.

Anyway, dependent upon manufacture and drive itself and what 'died', they may repair drive and return to you, or reformat and resell, or they may just trash.

Regardless, what possible sensitive info do you have on a PC HD? Not the best place.

I expect they will trash the drive as I wouldn't have thought trying to repair a drive was economical.

i don't know if its dead then they shouldn't be able to access your files right? does the hard drive load up at all becasue if it did you could write zeros to it.

or better yet drop it on the ground a couple of times by accident or put a magnet to it.

LOL don't listen to me!

My friend works at a computer store, when the remove a 'dead' HD, they drill two holes into the case through the platten surface. I have heard of this being done to viable HD's as well.

They also do this to any drive less than 1gig, b/c they cannot sell these on.

I have friend who bought a supposedly blank 80 meg hard drive, and it turned out to have a load of Fife Council files on it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I returned my hard drive back to the manufacturer because It died. How can I be sure the data won't fall into the wrong hands? Will the drive be repaired and sold or destroyed?
