Like i said last week, I bought a SATA Seagate instead of the IDE (I just wasn't paying attention).
The SATA is a 120GB Seagate and I also have a 80GB IDE Seagate. With the IDE HDD hooked up to the MOBO and the SATA hooked up to a Promise FastTrak SATA RAID PCI card...will that work?
I don't see why not, I cannot imagine it not being able to work, I just wanted to get your opinions and comments before I hook everything up.
Thanks, Rob

I have been thinking of doing this too. It should work just fine, my question is will SATA through a PCI card be as fast as it could be or would that limit the performance?

That's a good point - from what I have read it has very little impact on performance.
Maybe someone else will have a better view on whether or not the PCI SATA is any slower than on-board SATA and if it will flood the PCI Bus.

unless the SATA chip is integrated into the southbridge, I don't see an onboard pci SATA controller being any faster than an SATA controller in a pci slot. they would both be using the same pci bus.

Mk...
Not sure if I read it here somewhere, or...if I read it from Silicon Image or Western Digital....but...there have been reported problems with XP and PCI SATA controllers Pausing or hanging upon boot....periodically..
Does this jar any memories?
I'll see if I can come up with some backing...

I know that there was a problem with some WD drives and RAID.

Do you know if it's been resolved, via hotfix or software/driver update? Or...is it still an issue?

Sup guys!
I got Raptor on SIIG PCI SATA controller and all I wonna say it works great, my windows xp loads like 3X faster, some games load faster too. I don't know about RAID, never tried, but regular controller works great. Now I'm thinking about getting RAID card and another Raptor :) or wait till Raptor 74GB which WD promise to be 30% faster then 1st raptor.

Don't know where you got that from....
the only difference I see is .1 fater seek time, disk to disk....
Compare for yourself...

Hey!
BTW I got this info from www.wdc.com article from September 15 which states 30% increase in performance over Raptor I, try this link wdc.com Sep 15 (http://www.wdc.com/en/company/releases/PressRelease.asp?release={4033BFF9-3CBA-423C-ADE8-A3DBED7B48C4})

I read it...good stuff.
I think they are saying 30% increase overall vs. an IDE drive...
The specs on the two are pratically identical...other than size!!
I'll have my second Raptor in the next month or so. RAID 0...look out. I'll have to bench it prior to the second one and RAID...just to have some numbers to go by..
