I tried to install an extra 256 SDRam.Right now I have two slots 128 & 256,I removed the 128 and installed the 256. As it re-boots ablue screen appears with white lettering explaining that the BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant.Running W2K on HP Pav 7850 and it says memory expandable to 512.I can't find a place to upgrade BIOS. The only ID I can see on MoBo is CUW-AM.
Any Ideas out there.I'm sure not a computer wiz but I have IT people at work that can help if we can find where to go.
Thanks

Welcome to SysOpt! :)
Brand computers tend to be quite itchy when it comes to hardware upgrades, so, to start, you can view your PC's specs here: http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bph06283&prodId=hppavilion28134&cc=us
Check the memory specifications and make sure you only install a compatible type:
DIMM modules for the HP Pavilion PC must meet the following requirements
+ Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM). Only use DDR type SDRAM memory if the computer came with DDR-SDRAM.
+ 168 pins (184 pins for computers containing DDR-SDRAM)
+ Intel version 1.0 compliant
+ Single or double-sided
+ 3.3 Volts (2.5 Volts for DDR-SDRAM)
+ 64-bit unbuffered
+ Intel 4-clock
+ 66 MHz/10 ns, 100 MHz/10 ns, or 133 MHz/10 ns
Here's an HP video on how to install your memory: http://h20015.www2.hp.com/content/en/supportdocs/bph07901/bph07901.wmv
Here's how to upgrade/setup your PC's BIOS, be sure to use this method as a last resort and follow their instructions: http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bph07110&prodId=hppavilion28134&cc=us

That's what your PC needs. Here's the thing - not all 256MB sticks are the same. Yours may be ECC RAM (wrong type) or it may be high density RAM. Crucial is the best place to get what you need. It will work.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I reviewed all your material and web-sites.They were what I had been looking for to get the low-down on this machine. Now it's like a dog chasing a car :). I have a BIOS update on Floppy but did not install. I will take all memory out and take it to work to see if there is any difference.Maybe IT can tell. I know they work separately, but maybe not together.
Will try to let you know what happens.
Thanks Again

You can also test each stick of memory with http://www.memtest86.com to make sure none of them are bad. Try the newest one first.
