A more sensitive issue and one with greater legal and regulatory impact is the role of Google as a search engine. Many contend that Google, by far the most successful of the search engines is a de facto monopoly. If this assertion were proved or at least there were an investigation to determine how pivotal Google was in "the search engine sector", this could postpone or delay the IPO. It could result in Google having to take action to stimulate other competition and ultimately diminish the value and future earnings prospect of the stock.

Its not a monopoly. People use it because it works, not because they cant find anything else.

Plenty of anything else out there. Just not as functional.

IMO

Google has worked hard and ive enjoyed all the perks its brought along. Used to use lycos eons ago. :x

I remember when I relied on AltaVista. Google is great, I sure hope somebody doesn't buy it and then botch it all up (like maybe Microsoft).

I used to use Lycos and yahoo, but nothing can come close to google. There are probably hundreds of search engines, but most people choose google, how is that a monopoly? No one has twisted my arm forcing me to use google.

MS is working on their search engine for the web already for Longhorn. If google goes up, I wouldn't be surprised if MS bites. Eliminates the competition and gives them a good search engine.

Try using http://vivisimo.com.

It not only finds more links than Google, it categorises them.

That's because it's not a search engine at all, it takes the results from other engines (probably including Google) and "clusters" them into categories.

Is Vivísimo.com a search engine?
The search services at our Vivísimo.com home page are a showcase demonstration of our document clustering technology, as applied to web search. No database of web pages are stored there, since we do not crawl or index the web ourselves. The meta-search service at our home page organizes the outputs of other search engines: URLs, titles, and short descriptions. It is more properly seen as a clustering engine
