External Hard Drive

I have a WD 160GB 2.0USB external hard drive used to store Mp3 music and photographs. It enables me to share data with several computers. I have found that if I try to play music directly from the external hard drive or burn CD's my computer locks up.

I have an HP XL866 1.1 gigahertz AMD Athlon with 384 Mb Ram and Belkin 2.0 USB PC card. I can transfer music to the computers hard drive and play or record it from there with no problems. I am using ECDC 5 Platinum and the built in LG CD-RW drive that came with the computer.

Does anyone have an idea why I cannot play/record music directly from the external HD?

Go into the properties for the drive and set it to "Optimize for performance" instead of "Quick removal".
