Basically if you start paying ten bucks a bloody month RIGHT NOW for Steam they'll give you all their old games when you can pick them up for next to nothing. You still get a copy of HL2 that isn't dependant on Steam when it is released as well, but you just pad Valve's pocketbooks for doing nothing until then. I'm sure ATI gets a bit of the monthly proceeds from those customers, else they wouldn't have made the offer, but still, ATI isn't hurting for cash, and Valve is just coming off as an incompetent company I don't want to give money to and doesn't need it, or shouldn't.

I'm sure hard-core HL/CS players will pay the montly fee. As for me, I would get one of the 1,000's of underrated shooters with free multiplaying (or even the not so underrated ones like UT2K4). Forget HL2, it's too over hyped with serious problems (namly Pay-per-play multiplayer).

Its actually pay to play.

I support the pay to play in dynamic multiplayer only (ie. MMORPG) games, but I don't know how this will work in FPS games. In online RPG games there are ingame managers, changing environments, and ongoing support, so I see fees being reasonable. In FPS games they take maps and allow players to sort things out for themselves. A central server would help with lags and cheats, but I still haven't decided if thats worth the fee they will charge. I hope valve has something worthwhile up their sleeves to make steam worth it, but if there is nothing special then I won't be playing HL2 multiplayer.

Just what you said dude, money Grubbers:mad: they could careless about the consumer, they say they do, but they dont, its all for the company nothing else, as far as HL2 Online play goes, I will not be playing that, Ill get it for the single player thats about it, next thing you know we are going to be paying for every online game play, you watch, HL2 is going to start a chain reaction:mad:

they can try, but my kids don't ever go for this nonsense - pay for play may be in the future but it sure better be a whole generation better than what it is today.....

I'm not sure what the whining is about here. Guess its in vogue to bash Valve nowadays...especially for the misinformed.

This is my understanding of the situation. HL2 is coming out in 3 retail versions. Theres a wal-mart version which is 1 player only. Then there will be a 'full' or 'normal' retail version which is multiplayer and 1 player...what we're used to. Then there's also a collecters box which is also 1 and multiplayer. I don't know what version is coming with the ATI cards...full retail I would hope.

If you have the full retail version or coll. edition you won't pay to play HL2. If I want to go play old team fortress or counterstrike now do I have to use steam? Do I have to pay?(I don't think so, but I haven't touched either in a couple of years and could really care less about any of the old stuff).

The point is that if you don't subscribe to steam month to month, you have to buy the full retail versions of HL2, CS2, TF2, etc to play online. You'll also have to buy the expansion packs when they come out. If you pay steam month to month, you don't pay for HL2. CS2, TF2, expansions etc. When you consider the games are 49$ and expansions are 20-30, the monthy fee route might not be so bad if these games were all being released within a few months of each other (like that will happen).

Patches are free for any version, community based mods can/will be release on steam for free (unless the authors want to charge for it).

If you buy the full retail HL2 and want to use steam to play old stuff like TF or CS or other valve titles then I guess you'll have to pay for the subscription. If that's the case why not just do the subscription from the top and bypass buying the retail games?

Basically ATI/Valve wanted to give the coupon holders something to play with while HL2 is being finished. [*-deleted word-*] is wrong with that?

The thing most people fail to realize is that Valve is a company. The main goal of any company is to make a profit, and they will do whatever they feel will maximize that profit. The only people Valve/ATI has any responsibility to is their shareholders; they do NOT owe you anything.
