10 years ago the company held the computing industry in the palm of its hand. Start-ups shuttered at the thought of becoming the competition of this monolith.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The tables are turning...

Linux, Java, FreeBSD - just three years ago Microsoft laughed at this miniscule competition, and have even emulated the new programming standards. Now, however, Mirosoft is losing its grip.

Wireless

Wireless computing is where it all started. Windows CE posed itself to control the wirless OS Industry. Sadly, this was the first major slip up of Microsoft. Palm beat them to the industry, opening the door for all the tech-heads-in-the-basement-at-2:00 AM to take a shot at the software giant.

Linux

Don't laugh at the little penguin. This open-source project is becoming very serious business. Many industry analysts see Linux making some major strides toward Microsoft in the near future. Why? Linux operates with a fraction of the CE kernal space, making it the choice solution for PDA and Wireless handleld manufacturers.

Java

Java is not Microsofts cup of tea...Sun Microsystems has been a real problem for Microsoft. J++ is still under heavy scruitiny for its obvious emulation of Sun's Java. Again, Java uses an extremely small amount of space to operate. But Java has one more heads up over Microsoft - platform independence.

Other problems

What is with all of the new software releases? These programs each cost a good 200 bucks upon release and they upgrade them every 2 months! We were at a steady pace for a while, then BAM! Windows98SE, Win2k, WinME, and soon WinXP! Windows has already prepared an XP upgrade, AS WELL AS THE NEXT GENERATION of the os. At first, their profits soared, and people kept buying. But now consumers and businesses are becoming weary of the Microsoft solution - BECAUSE IT KEEPS CHANGING. There have been several initiatives that Microsoft has thrown at us, and they are starting to get it thrown back.

Market Control

Bill is getting greedy. Microsoft has failed in their futile attempt to control all aspects of front..and backend computing applications. WindowsCE is failing in the Wireless OS industry, and WindowsXP is the least awaited OS yet. The new OS is like a huge billboard, and like Yahoo - they are starting to advertise for extra cash. BAD MOVE.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is Microsoft losing their grip, or is there an underlying mission with Bill. I can only speculate, but right now - my money's not on Microsoft.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What do you think?

Best,

TJ (Michael Morelli)

Should I have posted this topic in the community forum???? It isn't really for General Tech - and has nothing to do with Apps and Operating Systems. Hmmmm.....perhaps a forum should be created for topics like this! - http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum17/HTML/004141.html
