I know a lot of the 'regulars' here will recognize me as a frequent poster--and I like to think I've written a few half-decent informal reviews and information pieces on topics here.

So I'm curious to know:

I'm currently testing WindowsXP (legally) for my University. Is anyone interested in seeing my thoughts and experience with this OS?

I would be. I've heard that it uses the NT/2000 kernel, does that make much difference? How does it look? I read somewhere that it look like somebody from Fisher Price had designed it? Does it do a better job of allocating resources? How is the security? That's the main concern I've read with people using it, is its security holes. It would be great if you could share some of impressions/opinions. Thanks.

Lay it on us! I'd like very much to know. One day I'll be changing OSs, and am eager to learn about each new one.

Yes, it is based on NT5 (w2k). The GUI can be changed to the standard windows one like win9x and NT. I prefer W2K and think I will be sticking with it but you never know.

I'm in a similar situation, Dputiger. We're currently testing XP at work. It needs to be ready for a pilot to ~200 users in September, then to 46,000+ starting in January.

From a support standpoint it's light years ahead of 9x and a big step up from NT4 (even with SMS). I like the Remote control tool and the fact that it's built in. Being able to easily fix corrupt system files over the network is very cool. Last week I was able to diagnose and repair a corrupt system in Australia with my **** sitting here in California. We broke the Aussie comp on purpose just to see if we could fix it. Fun stuff!

Of course we're interested!
But...you do realize that now we all know who to blame for missing any bugs that remain in the shipping version... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

No, it does not have that ugly startup screen like w2k. It has a black background and a colorful Windows XP logo, very nice, I will pay more attention the next time I boot it up. The log on screen is nice also since you now have a list of users, colorful too.

From what I have seen so far it is nicer than beta 2 was. Changing the GUI back to the standard windows one is no problem. Got my PPPoA card to work in RC2 (could not in RC1) and I am ready to start playing with it to see if I like it enough to upgrade from W2K. It will take a couple weeks to form a vaild opinion of it.

The only thing that is really annoying is the "Product Activation". The PA is enough to keep many people from upgradeing to it. It keeps popping up even though I have told it to remind me in a few days. There is a very simple fix for it though.

I'd certainly read it (especially if it has anything from a gamers perspective http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif). I'll most probably get it eventually (Win98SE at the mo) so any heads-up would be good.

I've been running RC1 for a couple a weeks and I think its great. I didnt need a single driver. Everything worked from day one.Upgrading should be a cinch although I partitioned and currently dual-boot.

The cutesy GUI is kinda stupid although its super easy to change.Hell, you can make it look like a MAC....(pukes)
