I don't have the 1.4 (yet) but from what I read, a very good cpu heatsink and fan is a must for these. They apparently run quite hot. And yes, you probably will want two 80 or 92 mmn intake fans up front and the same at the rear as exaust. Keeping case air as cool as possible is a huge controlling factor in how well your cpu runs.

Can you recommend any models and where to get them?

Here are a few places to look. I personally like the Swiftech MC 462 bolt on sink, but its a bit pricy for a lot of folks, and you will get a lot of advice for which heatsink to buy...everybody has a favorite.

My only advice is to stay away from The ThermalTake Orb type heatsink. To say it like one reviewer said..."they only look cool".

That Swiftech MC462 heatsink and fan looks awsome. But...it's too expensive for me. After purshasing the system I just did I wouldn't spend more then $30-$40 on a heatsink and fan. Can you recommend a heatsink and fan in my budget that will still do the job?

No, I sure can't recommend any. I know very little about the latch on type of socket heatsinks. Some have a spring latch system that is so strong, that they have sheared the tabs off of the socket. Others just simply don't do the job. I understand from what I am reading in the forums that these 1.4 Athlons are hot cpu's, and will take a good sink and pleanty of case cooling to keep the temps down to a reasonable figure.

Somebody should drop by here and maybe have the 1.4 running and is cool enough...they will be in a much better position to recommend a good HSF for you.

If you don't get an answer here to your liking, stop by this forum. These are AMD dedicated people. (http://www.amdmb.com/vb/index.php)

Be careful when inserting the power plug into the IBM DeskStar 60GXP hard disk drive. The receptacle is a little fragile and easily damaged if one of the pins from the power plug doesn't line up perfectly. If it takes more than moderate pressure to insert, pull the plug back out and find out why. These are supposed to be good drives, but, they do not have the support around the power receptacle that a Seagate or Western Digital drive has.

DBNOLL03,

Don't do what I did. I got a 1.2gig T-Bird and went with a $13 HSF with stock thermal tape.... Right out of the box, 40c idle and 60c+ under full load. Took off the thermal tape and replaced with local Radio Shack paste. Now have 33c idle and 54c full load. I got the CoolerMaster EP5-6I11. Look at it this way: is it cheaper to have to replace your CPU if it gets fried in 10 minutes or 10 months? I REALLY wish I had bought a GlobalWin CAK38 or something a little better. I've got 3 extra 80mm fans in addition to the P/S fan - 1 intake, 2 exhaust and I'm working up the nerve to start carving on the case to mount more....
