This is an A+ "Question of the day" I got in my email:

What type of disk partition must be used to boot an operating system?

A) Extended
B) Level1
C) Primary
D) Level0

Correct Answer(s):

C) Primary

Explanation:

Answer c is correct. A hard disk must have a primary partition for an
operating system to be installed on it. Answer a is incorrect because an
extended partition cannot boot an operating system. Answers b and c are
incorrect because they are fictitious.

QID:4318

HOWEVER, just yesterday i reformated one of my other computer's HD's with 3 partitions. The first I will be installing a version of MS Windows NT Server (Primary). Except i've already installed MS Windows 98 on partition D: (Extended). The computer boots fine, and so far everything works correctly.

So in other words, C: = Empty, D: = Win98, E = Installed Applications.

Well a hard drive can have up to 4 primary partitions. Technically Windows can only see one primary (the one it's on). So you may have 2 primary partitions with one OS on each and they may not be able to see each other.

Nope.. only 1 primary.. I haven't installed windows NT yet.. so only 98 is on the system, on logical drive D:. Drive C: and Drive E: are both empty at the moment.

On my triple boot system, I have ME ont he Primary partition of drive on, Mandrake 8 on the front of drive two and Windows 2000 Pro on the first logical drive of the extended partition on drive 1... Not a tpical setup, but there are exceptions to that rule. i would have said 'C' still though.
