Fellow Computer Buds and Buddets:

I'm using Win98se on IBM 30GB drive partitioned C-G.

Problem: Weekly virus update, scan, then defrag all partitions. About a month ago when I was performing this weekly maintenance: Error message: must run scandisk before defrag. I do so, and "C" drive defrags, no problemo. "D" partition starts to defrag: same message as above. So I scandisk "D" partition then successfully defrag. I figure, "Heck, scandisk all partitions first then run defrag All Hard Drives. WRONG! Error message appears at each partition, and I have to run scandisk then defrag one partition at a time. Why and how can I resolve this?

Three notes:

1. About a month ago, I "adjusted" http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif my msdos.sys file to get rid of Window's splashscreen, and began to utilize my custom screen;

2. About a month ago, I began DL-ing MP3s from WinMX: coincidence?

3. About a month ago, my computer no longer goes through a Scan Sequence when I reboot in middle of Windoze session...

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Try doing a scandisk from safe mode. That way most of windows isn't running. It might repair itself enough to let it run from windows then. Or do it from a boot disk.
Have you run system file checker to see if you have any problems?

system file checker can be ran by hittin start/run and typing "sfc"
(without quotes)

also you can avoid it by not defragging and not scandisking (unless a bad shutdown has occured) a la me http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
