Hey...anyone have a link to an older version of AIDA?
I have a co-worker's home PC here...a few years old. He thinks it's overheating...
Normally, I'd download the latest version of AIDA...and be on my way.
However, there is no NIC card in here....and I really don't feel like buring a few MBs to a whole CD-R.
Any links on a small software piece to monitor temps, that I can fit on a floppy...?
Thanks!!

AOpen white box.
It's an older slot type AMD CPU.
It looks like and MSI or Abit mobo...
I'll look again...

Ok, Strawbs...got some more info.
Left it runnign in the back room for bout an hour or two. It was locked when I got back there.
Opened the side...and low and behold, the case fan in the bottom was stopped. CPU fan and PSU fan workign fine.
Now...here's the info.
Inbetween the 2nd and 3rd PCI slot:
K7 PRO VER:1
Between the 3rd and 4th:
N1996
That's and Old MSI, right?
Now...the questions:
The case fan is plugged into the mobo.
I have the side off, and the PC in the back server room, at a nice chilly 60 or 65 Degrees ambient.
So...do you think the mobo knew to suspend it since the fan wasn't working. I know this is a feature on newer mobos...
Or...do you think It overheated and shut down? I can tell you it was barely warm to the touch...on the back side of the slot CPU.
Or...do you think the board is bad, causing the fan to shut down...and it to sit there and do nothing??
This looks just like the bugger....

Thanks..BP. Knew you'd be along sooner or later.
I think I've narrowed it down to either the PSU or the mobo.
It's an old setup...
it will just shut down for no rhyme or reason, and I'm 99% certain it's not overheating...
There are four LED's by the LTP port. They go from all green to all red, the Case fan shuts down...and the screengoes blank.
Power indicators on front are on, as are the CPU and PSU fans....
I'm gonna throw a new 80mm case fan I have laying around it tomorrow..using a molex, but I don't think it's gonna help...
Even cleared CMOS and reset.
Think I'm just gonna sell him on a new Asus, Barton and Crucial combo...
I'll give that speed fan a try. I tried CPU ID...wouldn't work.

Check the capacitors for bulging/leaking.

Sorry dajogejr, I had a knap this afternoon ...looks like BPB's been looking after you tho'. I was gonna suggest the Mobo Manu's own software but no need now.
:t
edit: The failing fan could be putting undue stress on the mobo, try a new one.

Thanx...Strawbs.
Yep, BPB had some good ideas.
No capacitors leaking or swelled. The last time it locked up, it kept Win98 on the screen. Wouldn't stay stable long enough to load speed test. Case fan stayed on this time....
Memtest86 has been runnin the last hour, no probs. Ran it just for the hey.
Told him either the mobo or PSU, more than likely the mobo.
Gave him the Option of an A7N8X-X, 2500XP, Antec 350W and Crucial 256MB. He was very receptive of it...
It was pretty darn cheap...like $270 @ NewEgg.
Told him to up it $150 if he wants to use XP Home, figured another 256MB and XP Home OEM CD...
Thanks for the ideas and help, gents!
Rest up, strawbs

Thanks...Jakk.
But...I think it's past a cooling issue...I'm pretty sure the Mobo's bad.
I'm gonna bring a spare fan I have at home to work tomorrow...and put it in for the heck of it, but..since the last time it locked, the case fan was still spinning...don't think it's the issue...
We'll see!
I will remember that for the future, though...
