I have an epox 8K7A+ and I just got a USB scanner. It's not working at all. I don't think it even sees it. I have the latest via 4in1 installed. How do I check if USB is working?

Also check in Device Manager and see if the USB ports are there and no conflicts are existant.

First I checked the bios. Only mention of USB in for keyboard and mouse. I enabled it anyway. Then in device manager it shows nothing connected to it. But when I click the scan button on the scanner it shows the scan window so it is communicating. I think I'll exchange my scanner. Maybe it's faulty.

I got off the phone with HP support and after many unsuccessfull attempts they asked about the chipset. Then they went back and said that their USB scanner sometimes work sometimes don't work with VIA chipsets. So my only choice is to get a scanner with a parallel connection. I guess I'll spend a little more. I currently got a 2200C. I can't believe with a brand new mobo there could still be a problem with VIA. I long for the day that a good mobo comes out without VIA chipset in it.

My KT7-RAID has this exact problem with my PDA hotsync. I just tried setting it up and have the same problem. Dangit!

Mine is with WinME though, so I am going to try thepatch and see...

You guys will not believe this. I just got a parallel and usb scanner. I hook it up with the parallel cable and guess what. I get a message saying win2k ONLY supports USB for scanners. Unplug the parallel cable now. So I guess I can NEVER have a scanner connected to my pc. Now this is such $#$# since I had a scanner before. A really cheap one with only a parallel port. Something here is messed up. 90% of the scanners I see are USB only, the other 10% are expensive and are HP. This is my second HP one and obviously their software is not working. I'm going to try to find a patch for win2k if there is one. This USB thing is not making me happy. Definitely the last VIA mobo I ever buy.

Hey Camaro, did you remember to install the USB Driver off of the driver cd?
Just a thought.

Yes. Everything has been installed and reinstalled many times. It just flat out refuses to work on parallel cable. I get this huge window"remove the parallel connection and insert the USB cable." Insert random swears here. I even have the latest win2k drivers from HP.
1. Why doens't parallel connection work in win2k? I had one before.
2. Why doesn't USB work?
3. Should I try a different brand other then HP? Other brands don't have parallel ports so USB will have to work.

Please I'm very lost here.

Camaro:

I'd definitely try a different USB scanner... Sounds like a compatability issue. Could be some other component (or software) on your box. Have you any other USB devices you can try just to see if it works?

My Abit (PIII) and Iwill (TBird) mobos (both VIA, of course) run USB scanners: both have run Visioneer Paperport and HP. Hmm.

Good luck...

I got two things out of the way. First this scanner works only in USB when using win2k. Second I dl USB checking soft and my USB is working great.

Well I got another scanner and same thing. My USB is not working or the software is not made for win2k, but it says it is so let's assume it's my pc. It's not showing anything on the USB port. What can I do?

Well I went to device manager and there is my scanner on USB root. Everything says device working properly. Sure it is working properly. Whenever I click "scan" it shoots up cpu to 100% and stays there. It's not the scanner as it's my second one now.

USB ready.

I guess HP tech was right. VIA and HP don't mix well. I can't believe at least one of them doesn't take steps to fix the problem
