I just bought a new 60GB HD, to replace my 13.6 GB.... I want to copy everything from my old drive EXACTLY how it is to my new drive, so I can boot from my new drive. I'm running Win2k, so I can't do this with Ghost 5.1 or 6... Any suggestions?

Would DOS Xcopy work? And if so, where can I find the file (I haven't had a DOS boot disk with all those old DOS exe's since back in the day).

Any other DOS based program that is easy to use? I tried using Dolly, but it can't read the large amount of sectors of either drive.

Any help greatly appreciated! I'm trying to avoid at all costs having to reload Win2k and all my programs, cause it took me a month to finally get everything stable and the way I want.

The program I used was DriveCopy http://www.powerquest.com/products/desktop.html

Winterwynde, all you have to do is get a copy of XCLONE to copy your old to new HD. YOu can just use the xcopy command but it wont get all the files, especially the hidden files. I have responded to a post in Operating systems group with same problem. I can send you a copy of XCLONE if you want, just respond to mentat_void@yahoo.com and I will send it--only 14k--and it comes with a readme file that explains in more depth about going about installing new HD and coping old to new. It works better than all the shareware **** out there, but you must be comfortable with the command line. If you follow instructions just like it says, you will have no problems whatsoever. I have used it many times with all my linux tryouts, windows stuff.

I always use copy/paste. view all files.
the only thing that is not copied is the swap file & that will be re-created on bootup.
this system works well as long as you do not have too many partitions you are trying to transfer.

Hi,

The best way to copy in in 'Safe mode' ans then all the files get copied. The swap file is not used and no files are loaded into memory also!

I have recently bought a 40 gb Maxtor and a 40 gb Western Digital drive, both of which come with a diskette with a utility that will copy partitions or the entire disk onto the new drive. Explore the disk that came with your hd or download the same utilites from the manufacturer's website. good luck.

I did the same thing few months back when I had to tranfer all my files(dual boot win98/win2k) from one HDD to another. I used Ghost4.0, used partition to partition copy. I transfered the Ghost.exe on a boot disk(win95) to run the program from DOS. Transfer was no problem, new HDD booted exactly the same as old one.

Okay, I don't have the money to lay down for drivecopy, and IBM drives don't have a utility to clone your old HD to your new IBM... so no luck there. Will Ghost.exe work in DOS mode only? Cause if it will, I could create a boot disk with Ghost, and try that.

I use drive image all the time. Works great.

You can do a search on google for xxcopy. It has a clone switch that makes it easy.

Ghost4.0 only works in DOS, don't know about ver.5.0 You can make boot disk from any computer running win9x, or go here and download: http://www.bootdisk.com/
transfer ghost.exe on the disk and boot.

**** I just searched IBM and your right. I couldn't find a copy utility like all the others have. That is pretty crappy. I don't think that the other manufactures utilities will work either.

I have used Drive Image Pro (http://www.powerquest.com/driveimagepro/) . They have a 30 day trial.
