I have a laptop with only 2 USB ports. My scanner is not USB. I will be getting a new printer that has both USB and parallel interfaces. Can I connect the printer via the USB to the laptop and then the scanner to the printer via the parallel port?

As long as you don't try to use both interfaces at the same time most devices will not have a problem with it.

Im not sure I understand.... Wouldn't I be using both interfaces on the printer if the printer is connected to the laptop with the USB and the scanner to the printer throught the parallel port?

Or do you mean "opperating" both the printer and the scanner at the same time?

Thanks for you help!

Don't see any problem, I remember we used to have same configuration in our old office, it was HP printer connected to the computer via USB, and old Acer scanner connected to the printer with parallel cable.

I hate to point this out but what you made is a very expensive copy machine......

Most new scanner software even have an icon labeled just like that as well.....

okay - I lied - I loved pointing it out and I've been there myself......;-)

Maybe I am missing the obvious here.... but if the new printer is USB, and the scanner is parallel.... why not hook up the printer using the USB port, and the scanner using the laptop parallel port? This makes more sense to me than daisy chaining them.

Then you have no issues (other than system slowness) when attempting to use both devices at the same time.

As I said in the org. question, the laptop has 2 USB ports.

I wish it did have both USB and parellel ports, then I wouldn't have to buy a new printer.

You sure your laptop doesn't have a parallel printer port?

I have never seen one that didn't have one. It might be hidden inside a plastic door on the back or something.....

Its a Gateway 1150. I've had it for a year and a half. The parallel port was the fist thing I looked for when I got it. I had no way of connecting my printer and scanner....

Trust me, it doesn't have one.

I'm sure they have a port replicator available for that laptop though, don't they?

Yes, I got one for the printer but it didn't work. And the one for the scanner cost MORE than a new scanner. So I was going to buy a new/better scanner until I noticed both interfaces on the printers.
