...has become too young and it's not to my tastes at all I'm afraid.
I'm having to ignore posts by too many people to make entering the community forum worth my while, and this is what was pulling me back here time and time again.
I shall be saying toodle ooo, until an older and more mature attitude arises. for the sake of the community I hope Sysopt turns from an after-school place to a technical discussion board. And soon.

Let's face it, those who make the Community forum a playground every so often realise that they might be construed as "Community lurkers". I assume they're eager to deny that label, so they post some half-arsed "technical" posts. That's fine by me, as long as everyone else agrees to ignore those posts :)

I agree, not to name names but some people ( I wont name names but you know who you are, if you don't just look at the main posters in the community forum ) bring nothing to this forum except mindless news articles about people getting their testicals crushed or what not, I also have all but given up on coming here becuase it seems the community BS doesn't stay in the community, many a threads in other sections get turned into "playgrounds" I have always been for the removal of the community forum, if you want to play chit chat get on IRC or somthing else, but hey thats just my opinion.
edit, I by no means am old, actually no one knows my true age here, so I don't want to hear any old bag stuff. And Bill I am one fo these 'young people' you talk off and I can almost guarentee I do more outside physical activity than 99.9% of the forum users here. SO DONT STEREOTYPE!

Oh man I never thought that this day would come, but I agree with mireland.
I for one think that yes alot of the posts are wastes as of late and have served no purpose. In fact I do think that they may drive the new people away that are checking out the form. However, just because they are there does not mean one has to read them.
From what I have seen it is just a cycle. Some will leave and others will come. It maybe good it maybe bad. The fallout happens it seems every 6 months or so. It is predictable as the 4 seasons.
If you think this form has junk check out techimo, that one is flooded with crud.

IMHO, SysOpt is the best thing since buttered bread... okay... mabey a slight exaggeration :p.
I post serious technical replies, but it is always nice to have a chat. Have a laugh at a funny news article. Be a little silly about something. Its all fine to me. If i was always thinking buisiness, or school.... id hate my life, we all need a break.
As for the users that think were a little too imature, well fine... if you dont want to post in the community, stick to the tech forums, we'll talk buisiness there. The users that come here and start offending us.... i just ignore and let them leave or stay... its up to them.
I always thought the community forums was for goofing off. I know this has gotten a little immature here, but its better than other forums where people cant have a laugh or take a joke.

I know I [*-deleted word-*] a lot on here, but I do it in the community forum which, by the very definition of it says Give your brain a rest from the tech-talk and come discuss ALMOST anything else that's on your mind. Wow, so we are ALLOWED to have fun?! Holy [*-deleted word-*]! Some of us are young, some are old, but no matter how you look at it you cant live your life without having fun. I dont care what you guys say, I enjoy posting both technical things (on my limited knowledge base, but is expanding while reading the so called 'non-technical' posts on the technical forums...) and things for enjoyment. It is a community forum, not ment to be full of technical things. We say what is on our minds here, and blow steam. Yes, some people are immature, but I believe that everyone has their day(s) about it. Nobody can learn to grow up without a basis for improvement. If they get that from online sources, so be it. I do go outside a ton, so I dont understand why everyone automatically sterotypes us into the 'never-seen-the-sun' catagory. I do spend a lot of time on my computer, but that is for my ENJOYMENT. I ENJOY having fun with people I barely know. These people allow me to see what others actually think about how everyone interacts, how the world is going, where we are going, etc. I actually use this in my life, and apply it to how I live. If you dont see past the seriousness of life, then you can never truly live. Life is a journey, live a little.
Oh, and by saying that you wont be comming back, thats not going to change a [*-deleted word-*] thing. However, your knowledge will be sorely missed here, no matter who you are. I appreciate everyones opinion on things, and the smaller our base grows, the less we are able to see the other side of things.

Em, at what point did the community forum become an extension to the playground?
yes you can discuss almost anything, and yes everyone is entitled to have some fun but in the community forum at the minute there is:
- Is it fashionable for women to be bisexual. Good decent thread which could invoke some proper discussion, what do we get a bunch of adolesant teenagers getting excited at the thought and not much in the way of a discussion (at least in the first page)
- woo - em, mindless babble about coasters, IE and insanity? Em, a useless and COMPLETELY pointless thread.
- aaahhh. fairly pointless to be fair.
- the thread about nothing. well at least the title was right.
Em, this is a technical support forum, if you want to give out mindless babble, chat about anything and generally flame each other why not get IRC or similar and leave this place for techies or people who need help?
Neverwhere, you need some guidance mate, there aren't hundreds of members, in fact a recent poll showed there was around 50 members who frequent the board (not counting people like me who are sick of the community thread). The people this site is alienating are the very people that need to kept.
The community forum in reality is where Sysopt exists, it has gone downhill recently, and members have been leaving for one reason or another. Sysopt itself is struggling to survive it seems (with limited updates and what-not to the main site), it's only the forums that are frequented it appears. And it's the forums where young people are destroying by their useless babble.
You want to have fun, do so by all means, in fact there are several threads that in my book are spot on - "New Windows Vulnerability Discovered!!!" was amusing, as was "funny commercial", but again, what is the point of the above threads?
If you lot showed some maturity, stopped the racial comments (that were directed at me and other Brits), proved yourselves more adult, maybe, just maybe the word "ALMOST" would be removed and we could engage in proper, adult discussions!
CJE-P, Steve R Jones and the like, if you want my advice, start moderating the community thread to be more technical based, close/lock threads like the above and start getting the main part of the site to be more fitting of a bussiness, not a school chat-room. Lets face it, if advertisers came along and saw that they are paying to place an ad on "The Thread About Nothing" do you think they will be impressed? I know I wouldn't, maybe they will appreciate the number of "hits"/views but the clientale it brings aint exactly the right people is it?

I think you are being a TAD uptight, but of course you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that. I for one don't have a problem with 99% of threads that happen here and the ones that do get out of hand are dealt with(I.E closed). Just my 2 cents, I would like to say more, but I can't think of the right words to say... http://www.fancysplace.com/smileys/croc.gif

10-14-2003, 06:46 PM
mireland, I do respect that people are entitled to their own opinions, but you have to remember, something that many people here don't, is that sysopt is owned by Jupiter Media Corp.
Maybe it is wrong to say that the mods should sort this out, because one day Jupiter Corp will come along, see this and sort it out themselves... If the young members, who in my and other people opinion's, are spoiling this thread don't moderate their own posts then they find that they spoil the whole site for everyone!
Maybe, the mods will have to become very heavy handed and make this site a much poorer place due to the orders of higher powers.
Maybe it won't but if you are willing to take that risk...

DocEvi1;
If there are some people you feel are posting mindless drivel; then why not place them in your ignore list. Then if you view pages in this forum you won't have to see what they're on about.
There are still alot of mature folks lurking in the background that will post occasionally when something suits their fancy.(no pun intended):t

Umm..... nope. Once again I agree there are alot of useless posts, but just do not go there if you do not want to read them.
Are they destroying the board? They could be. Maybe that is why less and less people are coming here.
Yes it is sad to invest time into a board to see it go bad. Nothing like having a high post count on a desolate board (which it is not yet).
If the neighbors are getting bad it maybe time to move, because they will not move for you.
Jupiter Corp will come along
I am suprised that they have not shut it down already. Someone must be clicking on the ads or something.

OH dear Lord, agreeing with mireland Jm and Cwin all in the same thread, I can't take much more........
maybe we could rename the community forum the Technical Discussion forum, that should solve the problem, and
personally I blame the administrators, cos the com forum is advertised as a place to give your brain a rest or to discuss ANY non technical topic, thats why you do not get "post credits" for posting here,
as for the childish, playground type banter and completely purile humour, I don't mind Doc, you'll become an old **** like me soon enough,LOL, anyroad Kurlyo beat ya to it in his "what happened to these forums" thread.

I agree with Doc that the "maturity" level of thread topics has hit some lows recently. But, I don't think I take it to heart as much. I wish I would see some more interesting threads and maybe more people, myself included, should feel comfortable to voice some interesting subject.
But, I honestly believe we wouldn't be down this road if certain decisions were made several months ago. I feel some of the greatest topics to be had are almost taboo here. Well, I'm not management or a mod, so what I feel probably doesn't count for much. But, right now I feel that any sensible thread could be locked down at a moment's notice because we have left the realm of "ALMOST anything."
Doc, speaking for myself, anytime I made a comment about Brits it was always in a joking context and made in defense of an American joke or two. Which I could care less about in the end.
And in between the threads of this forum that make chimps look like brain surgeons, I've learned more about other nations and the thought's of its citizens than any news program or literature. So, I don't think its completely dead yet.
Hope to see you around. :t

And no one can stop, me from feelin this way.
Lazy sunday afternoon,
I've got no mind to worry
Close my eyes and drift away
Close my eyes and drift away
close my eyes and drift away......
Anyone remember this ole tune.

See children, drugs are bahhhd (uh-huh)
and if you don't believe me, ask ya dahhhd (put that down)
and if you don't believe him, ask ya mom (you can ask)
She'll tell you how she does 'em all the time (and she will)
So kids say no to drugs (say no)
So you don't act like everyone else does (like I do)
And there's really nothin else to say (that's right)
Drugs are just bad, mmm'kay?
EMINEM! :D:t
