You could get the demo version of mircoangelo and make your own icons up that are transparent.

Not sure about Win2K but... you can drag them onto your Quick Launch toolbar for easy access and get rid of them on your screen...

Also, I asked this very same question once, and got some great replies, here: www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/000643.html (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/000643.html)

Here's a cute little program called "Hideit" that should do the trick for you. It available from here..... www.expocenter.com/hideit/ (http://www.expocenter.com/hideit/)

It works very nicely for me.

Now this is something I really don't understand! Why the heck would you want to hide all the icons on the desktop? Don't you guys ever use drag-and-drop? This is a feature that really speeds up work when you have a proper scheme set up for it. I keep 70 (yes seventy) icons on my desktop for easy access to all my important applications (I use two monitors though: #1 1280X1024 32-bit & #2 1024x768 16-bit).

The "My Computer" icon cannot be used for drag-and-drop, but it is still an easy access path into the "System Properties".

Why remove it? Why? /forum/smile.gif.

I tred that hideit program, abd while it does hide the icons, i cant drag anything to my desktop, and i cant right click to bring up my monitor properties...oh well, i guess im just picky. I shoudl be happy i finally have a clean screen :-)

A "clean screen" is an unproductive screen /forum/smile.gif. Why? Why?

Hi Skywalker,
In PC World of august'99 in 'Here's how' section there is an article about how to hide icons.
Look there.

1) Open the Control Panel.
2) Double-click the 'Display' icon. (The 'Display Properties' dialog box appears.)
3) Click the 'Effects' tab.
4) Select the 'Hide icons when the desktop is viewed as a Web page' check box.
5) Click 'OK'.
6) To close the 'Control Panel' window, select the 'File' menu and select 'Close'.

If your desktop isn't being viewed as web page, right click the desktop and select Active Desktop/View as Web Page.

Your desktop should remain "as is" but without any icons.

Can't say Glytzhkof.

I like my desktop minimal but keep at least the system, trash and the short cuts to the CD and Zip.

Skywalker[TSG]: well you've probably got the answer by now, but in Win98 this is really easy (dunno win2000). Just open Tweak UI and go to the "Desktop-tab" and deselect the system-icons you don't want on your desktop.

I'd be very, very careful removing the "My computer" and the "Recycle Bin" if I were you.

As for wallpaper, I've got 70 icons making up the wallpaper. It's a lovely mess, but the important thing is that it is effective.

And that concludes my involvement in this thread /forum/smile.gif (feels like I'm on a crucade here).

Somebody answer me please! Exactly what is the great benefit of having no icons on your desktop? Tell me how this can make you work more effective, because I'd really like to know!

If this is just a matter of principle (it SHOULD be possible to remove the icons) I'm all with you. Microsoft's tendency to tell us that "we've done the thinking so you have no choice" annoys me too, but I really don't understand why it is beneficial to work with a "clean" desktop. So the question is: is there a very good reason to do this that has passed me by? Does it improve performance?
